I have no idea if this will get any traction. I’ve really been digging the Futurebirds album that was the discovery pick for Magnolia Record Club this month. I decided to see what Allmusic would say was a similar album. Next thing I know I had spin the following by spinning a record that was...

Charles Mingus – Mingus Ah Um (Columbia, 1959 First Mono Pressing)
A bit late, but happy birthday to Charles Mingus. This incredible album is 61 years old and definitely a favourite of mine. 'Goodbye Pork Pie Hat' always get me, especially because it was a track dedicated to his friend Lester Young (who died a few months prior to this recording and was known for wearing pork pie hats).
Straight from Chengdu, China comes Hiperson's debut album No need for another history. Released in 2015 on the maybe mars label, this post punk, indie rock double LP consists of Chen Sijiang displaying her art school lyrics filled with imagery and vividness. Chen is well known for her use of poetry and using vivid imagery to get her point across. They were supposed to be attending SXSW this year until the pandemic hit. In 2019, hiperson was rumored to have broken up as the members went overseas for school, and then suddenly they released an EP on the damnably record label. This album is one of Yang Haisongs best produced records, every song feels different. A must listen for anyone who wants to understand more of the Chinese rock scene.
Released in 2019 on their new label damnably, hypersonic is back and stronger than ever. Chen's poetry is still on point but their instrumentation is the most developed it's been, experimenting with a range of new sounds, adding a new electronic mix in some songs and the introduction of some keys, makes me super pumped for their next album.
