Bill Evans Trio – Sunday At The Village Vanguard (Riverside Records, 1961 First UK Mono Pressing)

Over the past few weeks there has been quite a few 'Challenges' thrown about on instagram, were yu pick your 5 favouritesrecords. I was tagged a while ago to do each of the Blue Note series (which I finished 2 weeks ago) and I started the first of 3 Impulse! challenges over the weekend. I was tagged this week to do a Riverside one, which I will likely post at the weekend. When I think of Riverside my thoughts always fall on the piano, with Bill Evans & Thelonious Monk being the 2 prime choices. This one is a real toughie and I imagine I will be choosing 2 Monk and 2 Evan records, with an additional record added on for good measure.

Thelonious Monk - Brilliant Corners (Riverside, 1958 US Mono pressing)

One of Monk's greatest in my opinion. Supposedly tensions were strained during the recording though, with the title track taking 25 takes to get right and still needing to be spliced from 2 takes. In fact, the recording was so strenuous that Pettiford took to pretending to play after a heated argument with Monk, and Henry almost had a mental breakdown. Still, its a fantastic album and gained great reviews when it was first released.
