What's Spinning

The Jazz Composer's Orchestra - S/T (JCOA Records, 1968 First Box Set Pressing)

I've been spinning this one off and on over the past few weeks ever since it was flagged as a potential VMP Classics release. Its a fantastic album, certainly 'out there' but that's to be expected with Cecil Taylor etc. I really like it, it has that incredible workshop sound to it whilst also having an interesting story.

Elvin Jones Interview, 1980.

This is another interview cassette and its fantastic. There's a great anecdote from the drummer where he tells the story of recording the Sonny Rollins 'A Night at the Village Vanguard' album. Elvin had just been fired from J.J.Johnsons group and his brother Tom, who he described as a bit of a gangster, took him out to drink at the Village Vanguard. Wilbur Ware was standing outside, saw Elvin and said "Ah Elvin, just the person I was looking for! Go on through, Sonny wants to talk to you". So he goes down and there's Sonny with Pete La Roca. Sonny hums a tune and asks if Elvin can play in their next set, which he agrees to. Turns out that was the recording for the A Night at the Village Vanguard album. Elvin didn't even know he was being recorded and at the end Sonny gave him $75.
