The Prestige Green3 replacement stylus arrived from NY today, so I installed it into the Grado ZC+ and I’m breaking it in with a sweet PIF from earlier this year. About 20 hours should open it up, yes?
What a gig this would have been to be at. Van at the peak of his powers, and what pipes he has. I adore this album. Just hope that the rest of the concerts make their way on to vinyl some day too.
I have been playing and cataloguing the pile of cassettes that I picked up for weeks now and just as I felt like I was making a dent, the original seller messages me to say that he has a "few boxes more" from the same house clearance. Looks like I'm going to be very busy....
This is very likely to be my favourite album of 2020. Fabulous modern jazz but taking inspiration from Sun Ra, Mingus, Elvin Jones etc etc. It's really impressive stuff and I'm on my fourth listen already since getting it. Makes me want to get his debut on wax too (he's promised a repressing is on its way). Kirchner is a drummer but he doesn't want to put himself centre stage all the time and it's all the better for it.
Freddie Redd - The Complete Blue Note Recordings Of Freddie Redd (Mosaic/Blue Note, 1989 First Box Set Pressing)
A fantastic set from mosaic which contains 'The Music From "The Connection"', 'Shades Of Redd' and 'Redd's Blues'. I wasn't initially going to get this as I have a signed early pressing of 'The Music From "The Connection"', but I have been trying to find a decent copy of Shades of Redd for ages and this one sounds stunning! The booklet is, as with all Mosaic releases, fantastic and really interesting. Really happy with this set, its going to get played loads.
