Tubby Hayes - Tubbs In N.Y. (Fontana, 2019 Gearbox Records Pressing)

Decided to do another A/B comparison of the Tubby Hayes box set and an original pressing. This time its Tubbs in N.Y., the fantastic session which saw him team up with an American group of side-men for the first time when visiting New York. The night before this session he performed at a club which had a decent number of big-time musicians in the crowd eager to hear what the fuss was about. Tubby played a storming set which properly cemented his reputation, with several of the musicians in the audience buying him a pint (which he stated as tasting like 'weak piss') and chatting to him about music.

Sault "Untitled (Black Is)" (2020 Forever Living Originals)

So I was intending to buy "Untitled (Rise)" but ordered this by accident. I prefer Rise but it's no biggie. Unfortunately, it also came with scribble-type scratches on 3 of the 4 sides (see photos). Not sure what happened here. The record is packed in those shitty paper sleeves, but still, I didn't see any rocks or sand in there. Probably some bad handling at the pressing plant. They're audible for multiple revolutions, but the record plays through.

Long story short, I contacted the vendor and this ended up being a free record. So I can't complain too much. Too bad because the pressing is quite good otherwise.

Now hopefully I can get a copy of "Rise" when it gets repressed. And probably replace this as well.

Billie Holiday - Lady Sings The Blues (Verve Records, 2020 VMP Essentials Pressing)

Wow wow wow. What a killer way to end the year. I have had this album on my wantlist for years but was always overwhelmed by the amount of reissues available. So glad VMP picked this, really fantastic pressing as well and I'm really enjoying the booklet that came with it, written by Emily J. Lordi.

Donny Hathaway - Everything Is Everything (ATCO Records, 2020 Vmp Classics Pressing)

Another fantastic release that I would never have heard if I hadn't been subbed to the Classics. Hathaway sure had great voice, and what a killer backing he had!!! Super nice pressing as well. Very happy with this one.

The Stan Tracey Quartet ‎– Jazz Suite: Inspired By Dylan Thomas's Under Milk Wood (Columbia, 1956 First Mono Pressing)

Im currently reading Ronnie Scott's biography, 'Jazz Man' and was just reading a section on the pianist Stan Tracey and his involvement with Ronnie's club, so it seemed like a good time to spin this fantastic album.
