What's Spinning

i've ordered from burning shed a couple of times. disappointing to see you had issues, and that their initial response was rather dismissive.

Yeah...I order everything XTC/King Crimson/Jethro Tull related from them, too. This was the first time I've ever had an issue.

It won't stop me from ordering from them again.

It was pretty obvious that the barcode on the shipping label was causing issues with shipping - and while they seemed to think that it could be the reason - they seemed quite peeved that I mentioned that maybe the barcode shouldn't be on it - as it is only their in-house ordering number.

Nothing else on the package could have kept sending it back to DC other than this barcode. I know my local PO makes sure there are no other barcodes on the package when I send something out.

I saw The Who on their 1989 tour and don't think I've listened to much from that period since then. That tour was a Tommy set and a regular set. It was a fun show.

Just pulled this promo box set out for the first time in an age. I had a blast.

It's readily available on the cheap if it's your thing.

Day 26 - I’ve Got The Blues

Robert Pete Williams - Angola Prisoners' Blues (Collector Records, 1960 First Pressing)

I stumbled across another album by Robert Pete Williams, 'Those Prison Blues', at a carboot sale a few years ago and found it to be fantastic. I then managed to get this at an incredibly low price on ebay (£12) last year. Its a superb record with an incredible story. In 1956 he fatally shot a man in a nightclub, which he claimed was self-defence, and was given a life sentence. Later, two ethnomusicologists recorded him in prison (this album being recorded at the Angola State Penitentiary some years later) and ended up pleading for his innocence. In 1958 he was given parole and was required to provide 80 hours of labour per week. After that he recorded several albums, with many songs being written whilst he was in prison.

Angola is quite a place. I had a client there about 20 years ago. I went to visit him. That was an experience I'll never forget. Driving through the grounds and seeing inmates working the fields while officers patrol on horseback with shot guns. There is an older documentary about it called The Farm that is worth a watch. I'm sure there are other things out there to watch about it. It's a heavy heavy place.

If you're looking for more of the same, I can recommend Southern Prison Blues. Also recorded by Harry Oster at Angola with features from both Guitar Welch and Hogman Maxey.
