What's Spinning

The agutierrezb 2019 record collection challenge

So I've decided to embark on my own personal challenge, which consists of listening every record in my collection before the end of the year. My record collection is not that big -only ~250-, but I still feel like there are a bunch of records I don't give enough attention to, while still adding more titles to my shelves.

For this reason I've set a couple of rules in order to play every record at least once before December 31st: I'll play at least one record a day, going from front to back in the way I have them sorted in my shelf. I can play a different record (i.e. Not the next one in alphabetical order) if I feel like listening to something else in any given moment, but at least one of the records I spin in the day has to be the LP in turn.

I didn't take pictures for the first two days, but I'll try to document the process from here on, so I'll be posting daily on this thread. Wish me luck!

This is nice comp of various kinds of Mexican folk music that my girlfriend found in Spain. There are some gems here, I'm glad she decided to buy the record when she stumbled upon it.

Same here, although it feels like opportunities to see him in NC are few and far between.

Here's a link to my recording from the last time I saw Alejandro. It's a duo show with Susan Voelz, and it's really good. Enjoy!

He was in great spirits. Introduced me to his soon to be wife and was just his incredible self. Not too long after he was trapped in a hurricane, He struggled for a while afterwards, finally figured out that experience resulted in PTSD and completely screwed him up, left Austin for a fresh start and made the spectacular Burn Something Beautiful.

Alejandro has had more than his share of bad luck. When I first started recording his shows, I worked with a guy in his organization named Mike Thompson, basically Alejandro's right hand, that coordinated all the tapers. During one of our conversations he told me how dire it actually got when Alejandro was felled with hepatitis. Mike told me every night when he left Alejandro he made him promise he wouldn't die and they'd see each other the next day because in all their years together Alejandro had never broken a promise. Heavy stuff.

I remember seeing him at some little jazz type club in San Diego around that time, he seemed exhausted and only played around 45 minutes. I really thought he was going to be done. It's great to see him back playing.

We've been lucky in the northwest, he's good friends with Scott McCaughey and Pete Buck who both live here. They've worked on those last couple albums, so he's been up to work on them and play with those guys. Had a great solo show a few years back at a tiny place.

Thanks for linking that show, I'll check it out. Not sure if you're a Chuck Prophet fan, but I'll assume so. He just put his Great American Music Hall show with an orchestra on YouTube, check that out!
