What's Spinning

The agutierrezb 2019 record collection challenge

So I've decided to embark on my own personal challenge, which consists of listening every record in my collection before the end of the year. My record collection is not that big -only ~250-, but I still feel like there are a bunch of records I don't give enough attention to, while still adding more titles to my shelves.

For this reason I've set a couple of rules in order to play every record at least once before December 31st: I'll play at least one record a day, going from front to back in the way I have them sorted in my shelf. I can play a different record (i.e. Not the next one in alphabetical order) if I feel like listening to something else in any given moment, but at least one of the records I spin in the day has to be the LP in turn.

I didn't take pictures for the first two days, but I'll try to document the process from here on, so I'll be posting daily on this thread. Wish me luck!

#186: Charles Mingus - Mingus at Antibes

#187: Hank Mobley - Soul Station

Somewhere along my jazz-learning journey I got tired of straight-ahead hard bop, finding it a bit formulaic after a while. I purchased this Music Matters pressing without ever hearing the album just because I found a god deal on the record. I'm glad I did, because I believe this album is one of the best examples of how good hard bop can be when done right. It's not like Mobley is discovering any new territory, but he seems to play ALL THE RIGHT NOTES, EVERY TIME.

Lust For Life. Like The Idiot I have this on black as well as this clear edition. This album had a big impact on teenage me and it is still tons of fun. Turn Blue, Neighbourhood Threat, Fall In Love With Me, Success are all nearly as good as those two amazing career defining tracks. Lust For Life and The Passenger have been heard a million teams (and are worth a million in prizes) and still work within this album. Hard to believe the backing band are more or less Tin Machine. This should have broke Iggy commercially but Elvis met his maker on the commode and the record label stopped pushing Iggy and started repressing The King. Today though it rightly stands as a classic. What a run by Iggy, 5 of the best of all time in a row.

Everything but the Girl - Amplified Heart

This was an album I thought would never get released on vinyl. Then EBTG started a reissue (or in this case, first time issue) campaign last year to release their final three albums on vinyl, all half speed mastered at Abbey Road. It sounds amazing, and I can’t wait for the release of Tempermental next month.

Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix

I know this pick was somewhat controversial (or maybe too safe?) but I absolutely loved it. This is one of my favorite albums of the past 15 years and I love the touches on the VMP version - mirrored album cover, pink vinyl, full size lyrics book. I saw Phoenix twice on this tour and songs like Lasso, Armistice, and Love Like a Sunset just sound so massive in a live setting.
