I tried my luck and they shipped it within a week and a half.

As for where I heard of it. I saw it on upcoming released last summer and gave it a listen on Apple Music. Flagged it for interest. Finally pulled the trigger.
Cool. I had preordered it. She’s from Durham and has worked with Bombadil, a band I dig a lot. It’s a very good album. My local did a release party for it.
 
This is one of those albums that I’ve had a long strange history with. I find the live performances from this era much more compelling and whatever dumb ideology I had as a kid about the studio magic nature of this album was just that - dumb ideology. Is Macero’s manipulation as masterful as what is being done by Makaya McCraven? Absolutely not, but it is revolutionary in that aspect. It is as always an interesting listen.

This is the first physical copy I’ve ever owned.

It’s been quite awhile since reading about Teo’s practices in the studio but my memory is that he was pretty much a “roll tape” kind of producer. The magic of Bitches Brew’s sound on record was the musicians in the studio and the times they were living in. Oh, and the genius of Miles Davis. Hopefully I haven’t missed your point. 👍

It is a highly constructed album. Teo did roll tape, but the end product is the result of tape splices and editing. It’s not organic takes. McCravan has heightened that whole process to where he is Creating wholly different pieces of work from what he and his bands do in the studio or live and seemingly is working towards that end product. There was a part of me when I was younger that recoiled at that (at least in Jazz because the hypocrite in me had no problem with the Beatles or Hendrix using the studio and the tape to construct music differently).
 
@Nee Lewman can you cite a source that describes or explains your view that album is “highly constructed” as I would be interested in learning more. I just read that Teo Macero was simply an apprentice and observer on the two dates the album was recorded on. Irving Townsend is credited to have been the actual producer although no credits were given on the album sleeve. Teo’s first production credit with Miles was the following album Sketches of Spain. I love the history of jazz even more than rock ‘n roll.

It’s what I’ve read, both the allmusic review and Wikipedia entry mention Teo splicing the whole thing together.

I learned something because you asked, I didn’t realize this was some big revelation around the time of the box set. I had checked it out from the library in High School and it flew right over my head. In college, a bunch of friends where entranced by it so I heard it a bunch but something about it didn’t quite mesh for me. Eventually I heard Live Evil and other recordings with the material on it and started to reassess the album and read about how it was edited and spliced together and figured that was what was off about it to me. I had a copy of the complete sessions once
Upon a time but never read the liner notes. I did listen to it quite a bit though.
