YEAR END MEGALIST 2024!!!!

2024. The year that truly was crazy, scary, spooky, hilarious.

Recycling my top 8 format and point distribution from previous years to keep things simple. My list this year definitely leans more pop-centric and I don't expect to have a ton of overlap with the rest of the forum, but as always I try to keep these year-end lists as honest as possible. I like what I like, and these are the albums I kept coming back to in 2024.

  2. Kendrick Lamar - GNX (18 pts)

Me going from never hearing of Starflyer 59 to really enjoying my stream of this album and others while on a chilly walk around a park to being outraged that Leave Here A Stranger has never been reissued over the past 23 years

This is why I love this place and end of year lists.

Do you or anyone else have any other SF59 album recommendations that I should be checking out?

Gold and The Fashion Focus
@TenderLovingKiller® Glad you are enjoying it! Jason Martin, who is the primary singer, songwriter and guitarist for SF59 has 17 albums and several EPs. The band behind him is a rotating cast of experienced musicians who often put out their own solo material (Frank Lenz, etc). SF59 has been a remarkably consistent project for Jason-he also appears under other band (dis)guises as well. Early SF59 is often labeled as 'shoegaze' but that is not always how I would describe his work. Gold, Silver, Old, Fashion Focus, My Island, Singing Voice Talking Voice, are very good LPs, but any any of his output is all worth picking up if you like what you heard. And yes, finding the older vinyl can be a challenge...

Yeah, the 17 albums is why I felt the need to get other opinions, especially since it appears that he’s still releasing quality albums. Usually I am pretty good a just burning through a discography but when they’re closing in on 20 releases guidance and suggestions are greatly appreciated by you and @Wes C. Attle

Thanks again!

This shit is rad. Like good enough I may have to boot something off the 4 points list if it grows on me over the next couple weeks. Thanks.

Shoutout to @Rip_City for organizing this once again!!

I was beginning to think I’m the only one who prefers Cutouts to Wall of Eyes!

I only put Cutouts on my list too. Wall of Eyes probably has higher highs but it has lower lows. Cutouts is more consistent across the board. I kind of forgot Wall of Eyes was this year as well when I made my list but I'm not sure it would have made it anyway.

I've only listened to Cutouts maybe 3-5 times, but I feel the opposite. Other than the ending track, which I'm lukewarm on, I love every track on Wall of Eyes. It was a slow grower over the course of the year, where each time I returned to it, a new track would become a favorite. Where as Cutouts has failed to hook me on any level.

Which is interesting because Amnesiac is actually the Radiohead album that turned me into a diehard during college and I keep hearing comparisons. Though that's probably just because of the b-sides nature of both.

Wall of Eyes has some good moments ("Teleharmonic" specifically stands out to me) and I can see why a lot of people on here would probably prefer it, but personally I found several of the songs to be kind of formless and built around riffs and ideas that didn't really appeal to me. I listened to it a few times when it came out at the start of the year but it fell out of rotation pretty quickly as new things started coming out. I even revisited it in preparation for making my list to see if I'd have a change of heart, especially after I enjoyed Cutouts so much, but it still left me kind of cold.

It's interesting to see that apparently a lot of the people that liked Wall of Eyes didn't care for Cutouts and vice versa. I guess it will just depend on the kind of listener you are. I know the two albums supposedly came from the same sessions but honestly they don't really sound like it. Cutouts seems like the work of a much more punchy and direct band who are giving you tangible hooks and rhythms to grab on to, which is something I'll naturally gravitate to more as a listener. I could be off base in my descriptions but at least that's how I would try to word it.

I can't say if it was recorded at the same time, but when I saw them touring for the first album they played songs that ended up on both Wall of Eyes and Cutouts, so some of the songs definitely all floating around at the same time.

I believe that same dynamic exists with Hail/In Rainbows vs Kid A/Amnesiac vs King of Limbs/Moon Shaped Pool. Thom's solo work varies between Eraser, Boxes, Atoms, and his soundtrack work. The Smile is following a similar route. I personally theorize it may be due to recording during long stretches in studio (more individual, piecemeal and experimental) versus recording after or during tours (group ideas from playing live together, record more quickly).

I think this is a solid observation.

Radiohead is my favorite band of all-time and the only musician who has any chance of knocking them off that #1 spot is Kendrick. Cause Outkast, Talking Heads and Pink Floyd are done with their output. And the only album I'm so-so on within their discography is King of Limbs. But the disclaimer to that is that the Live From the Basement of King of Limbs is fucking incredible. TKoL was very clearly the product of touring and getting into a jammier headspace... but arguably failed to capture that energy in the studio version.

I'm listening to Cutouts right now and enjoying it. It reminds me of King of Limbs more than any other Radiohead album which may be why I initially bounced off of it. I would agree it is punchier than Wall of Eyes. I would not say that it has more hooks. Like, it's the Can fan in me that appreciates what they are doing here. And I would never call Can (outside of Vitamin C) catchy. I think the problem is that some of the mellower tracks lean ambient (Tiptoes, Foreign Spies) and that's never been my vibe.
