New album that didn't sound much like the band vs their 3rd album which is arguably one of their best.

Though I agree that not repeating an Essential is the reason it won't happen, it does bring up an interesting thought for VMP - how much are they willing to stick with that if the selection was a new album and then they're offered the chance at a 20y+ anniversary reissue of a 'classic' album by that artist? (The answer, as always, is $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$)

Yeah, I'd agree it's pretty raw but man that album opens up with a goddamn rollercoaster of a track. My favourite track by them (albeit not my favourite album).

It's a band you kind of have to have an emotional experience with and then everything clicks. I loved Takk when it came out, but seeing the Heima doc and then the show at Massey Hall (legendary Toronto venue) changed everything.

Oh, I absolutely adore Sigur Ros, and have even seen them live 3 times myself. AB is honestly one of my favorite albums from that era too, so I'm excited to see how general pop reacts to it. But Visions is a much easier sell, which is precisely why it's the middle album of the three.

And yeah, that Life Aquatic scene is an all-timer.

I can't fathom it being "essential" in the broader sense, but Pond was a beloved Portland trio that is reuniting for shows in early 2022, and their 1997 Rock Collection is an unheralded classic. Some have described them as a cross between Weezer and Nirvana, which resonates. I hear shades of early Everclear as well.

Again, no chance they are the VMP pick, but they fit the clues and it's a great album worth a mention here. Definitely essential in a late 90's PNW kind of way. Check it out:

In general, I respect the yawn, but have you listened to Perfect from Now On? A desert island disc for me.

Given that PFNO just saw a reissue in 2020, it's probably Lonesome Crowded West. Which is peak Modest Mouse in my opinion, just a shade or two better than This is a Long Drive...

1997 was also the release year for Either/Or, and Dig Me Out as someone already mentioned. A damn good year in the PNW.

Oh, to be clear…I loathe Everclear, and tolerate Weezer at best - much to the chagrin of a good friend - but somehow Pond works. Give it a listen.

Weird, I subscribed when it was Pinkerton, what was that 5 years ago now? And have only had 1 duplicate. The national. Suddenly I have 2 in 3 months? Got LCW when I traded in a cake box set years ago and Sigur Ros on sale for like $10 on Amazon.

BUT "Patrick Watson" on the other hand is considered a band, not a solo act I believe, despite the name. But that is a minor detail I'm positive VMP would overlook especially now that they've added prizes and a sense of officialness to the proceedings.

If it is however, my wife would be absolutely thrilled.

I'd be legitimately shocked if VMP went with Watson, but Adventures In My Own Backyard is a lovely album, and they might like to tie-in to all the bands/artists he's worked with over the years. Still, feels very unlikely.

Yeah, great album! Used to own it but sold the pressing because it was so noisy.
