  • Starting the day with a more balm-soothing sound: Sylvan Esso’s new album. Sorry Sufjan. Can’t do depressing right now

It's a high energy album for sure but the songs all sound the same to me 🤷‍♂️

The new Sylvan Esso sounds similar to the old Sylvan Esso but they’re one of those bands where if they drifted out of their lane it wouldn’t make any sense. I like this new album just fine.

People seemed really uninterested in their last LP but I never understood why. It’s better than their debut, and was one of my favorite albums of that year. I still listen to it regularly. This new one will grow on me I bet too.
Shore is as gorgeously layered as Crack-Up, but as accessible as Helplessness Blues. More upbeat stuff on here which I am here for. But I do wish it was a bit more complex like CU (now that that one has clicked I adore it).

i actually feel like it's every bit as complex as Crack-Up. Maybe it's just not as obvious after one listen because these songs are so damn catchy. I love Crack-Up too, but it tended to meander a bit - Shore does its meandering but stays within a more focused realm while doing it. For a 50+ minute album it's awfully concise.

This is based on immediate impressions. But I get ya, I could see it being as complex as CU but yeah the catchiness is what grabs me. There are amazing instrumentals in these tracks though, some that you don’t even notice the first time you listen.

I think I agree @Bennnnn. CU felt more majestically raw out the gate, with even a hint of folk-psychedelia. This new one aligns a bit more with the accessibility of their first two, but with some of the CU layers baked in. That's a first impression of course.
Took a chance and got a haircut yesterday. It’s been so long that I forgot what it felt like. Thankfully my hair stylist is taking everything incredibly seriously. And opened her own new space. So it felt very safe and good and comfortable.
anyone have any luck getting a good replacement from Secretly Society / Jagjaguwar. This pressing of Whole New Mess is...a mess.

My copy is pretty good, other than a loud click to start Side B, but it's before any music comes on

They have always been good to get replacements from. My buddy got the pink one from bandcamp I believe and it has a HUGE scratch on side B that causes clicking for almost an entire song.

Yeah I got it directly from them. At points it’s nearly unlistenable and has too many skips. I cleaned it and everything. There are places it sounds okay...but I find it frustrating to listen to because of all the problems.
New Bright Eyes is growing on me. New Killers is surprisingly solid and fun. Eagerly anticipating my copy of the new Bully album. But honestly...all I want to listen to is the Hadestown Broadway Cast Recording. It's not new, but it's new to me, and I cannot get enough. Been obsessed for like a month now and I haven't stopped listening to it.
Sold a record for $180 and don’t have any mailers!!
Didn't realize there was a new Oddisee album out. I like it well enough, but half skits and half songs? Eh. I get the sentiment of the skits, but I don't need them every time I listen.
As a fan of both Taylor Swift and The National, I am so here for Folklore. It doesn't have the high pop sounds that I go to her for, but it's a really nice expansion of her sound. I can see plenty of people not caring for it, but I think it'll probably be the most grower record in her catalog.
I’ve seen more live shows this year than the past few. two from Angel Olsen, Laura Marling, multiple Waxahatchees, two Bullys, and tomorrow Mt. Joy. And I never had to leave my living room.
Looks like I’ll be going back to work in a couple of weeks. At this point, I think it’s a mistake. But at the same time, I’ve missed the kids in my classroom so much. Zoom doesn’t help really.

I really don’t understand the thought process, we shut stuff down when we have 1/5th the amount of daily cases and then open it al back up like we’re a bunch of frontline soldiers heading to battle?

Yeah it's crazy. The place I work for has been so cautious and pretty great throughout most of this, but now, as it's worse, we're all expected back... what

Our district just decided today that at least the first 9 weeks will be remote learning only. Truth be told I am relieved the decision is made for us and we don't have to wrestle with splitting time or even sending her at all for now. It still sucks!
Stranger In The Alps is so good, but I might like Punisher more. I can’t get enough of it. And the songs that add more textures and instruments are incredible pieces of music.
Does anyone know when that Freddie Gibbs / Madlib Piñata 64 record is supposed to ship? I made an order a few weeks back but haven’t heard anything other than “your order has processed.”

@Jmcg85 here ya go: Freddie Gibbs & Madlib - Piñata '64 - it's a special edition of Piñata - with a Blue Note styled cover art and half speed mastering. It says Shipping Now I just noticed, but I haven't heard anything.

I'll have a look. Against the better judgement of my current wallets wishes. Thank you 🤝🏼
My cat jumped on my face while I was sleeping last night and cut the bottom of my eyelid. Now I have to get prescriptions for this mess. I can still see, and I don’t need stitches...so that’s good? But this...an awful way to be woken up.
VMP sucks and everything, but this Anthology set of the Grateful Dead is impressive. Expensive, yes...but I got one right away. It’s the perfect blend of studio and live albums all put together
