2024 July Challenge Thread - Welcome to Japan! (日本へようこそ!)

Day 5 / 2024.S7.E5 - Simplicity (単純)
Play a record that gives you cause for you to think over the course of its runtime. It does not necessarily have to be an ambient/minimal record, but rather something that allows you to reflect on what you are hearing.

Kamasi Washington - Fearless Movement

Kamasi records always feel like a musical journey. I can’t help but sit back, and let the music take me where it wants to.

Tindersticks - Ypres
“Commissioned by the In Flanders World War One museum in Ypres, to create a permanent orchestral soundscape to be played continually through the museum every day without interruption, Ypres can be best understood as an aural memorial without walls to the hundreds of thousands who died during the two battles for the town”

Day 5 / 2024.S7.E5 - Simplicity (単純)
Japanese art often focuses on minimalism…preventing the background distracting from the subject as much as possible. Sometimes a simple subject is all that is necessary to convey a message. Play a record that gives you cause for you to think over the course of its runtime. It does not necessarily have to be an ambient/minimal record, but rather something that allows you to reflect on what you are hearing.

Masahiro Sugaya (菅谷昌弘) - Horizon, Vol. I

20240705_151344.jpg

Resonant, free-flowing ambient Japanese elegance from a local reissue label. The label has put out only three releases in their existence, and none since 2019.
I am looking at some childhood photos while listening to this and it is a good pairing.

Tengger - Nomad

Pretty sure this was a @TenderLovingKiller® recommendation...this gets lotsa spins.

Amaro Freitas - Y’Y

Unless the next five and a half months are some of the most amazing for music in history, this will rank very high in my top ten for the year. Right now, this and Reyna Tropical are vying for my AOTY.

This is a meditation on spirituality and nature. It contemplates man’s connection to each and each other. It is one of the most powerful musical statements I have ever encountered.

Godspeed You Black Emperor! – F♯ A♯ ∞
1000006456.jpg

I have spent so much time with this album through the years (more with the digital version than the LP version, but a good deal with both), in both positive and negative contemplation. It was even my primary writing soundtrack for the majority of my 2010 residency in the Spoken Word program at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, which was a particularly pivotal and transformative couple of weeks in my life.

The Caretaker - An Empty Bliss Beyond This World

IMG_7281.jpeg

Exclusively instrumental, this is a really interesting and devastating depiction of the progression of Alzheimer’s and the idea that memories involving music tend to be the last to dissolve as the disease advances

Day 5 / 2024.S7.E5 - Simplicity (単純)
Aki Tsuyuko - ongakushitsu

freeform solo electric piano that all sounds a bit like dream sequence music from a midcentury arthouse movie. it’s timbrally soothing like ambient music but harmonically distressing like atonal modernist composition. one of those records you want to put on in the background but ends up demanding your attention anyway

July 6 - Play a record that pairs well with autumn

Mogwai - Les Revenants OST

Nothing says “autumnal” like French zombies. I knew of Mogwai since they started in the late 90’s but never really got into them until later. We started to watch this tv show in 2014 I think, but didn't Mogwai did the soundtrack for it. I loved the main theme and realized that Mogwai did the soundtrack. Picked this album up and it all clicked for me then.

Day 6 / 2024.S7.E6 - In another season… (別な季節に)
Maruyama Park (円山公園) was a beautiful respite last year…right before the tourist chaos of Kiyomizu Temple (清水寺) with its winding, uneven walkways and shops from end to end. As lovely as the park was, seeing the red colors juxtaposed against the remainder of scenery had me thinking that the park's appearance could transform entirely in autumn, especially since our group missed the prime of sakura season. Play a record that pairs well with autumn/fall.

Toshiko Yonekawa (米川敏子) - Tapestry Koto & The Occident Hillside (箏 山を詩う)

20240706_153123.jpg

As if I didn't love the sound of the koto (箏) enough, the genre interweaving that can be tastefully implemented with it as a major instrument (lounge, jazz fusion, downtempo) elevates my intrigue. It is a genuinely beautiful instrument. It is common to hear one performing on a koto to customers/family after a luxurious kaiseki (懐石) meal, even better with a backdrop of Japanese maples and orange/red foliage.

I do my best not to think when I'm listening to music and just let my mind do it's own thing.

This was the first album I thought of with fallen leaves...

Mandolin Orange - Wildfire

This album is just fall to me. From the golden red cover to the vibe of the music.

Edit: the band changed its name to Watchhouse a couple of years ago and rebranded everything to the new name. So when they finally get around to doing pressings of their first two albums they will have this other name on it and my shelf will look weird.
