April 2025 Spin Challenge – Well, this is puzzling…

Day 10 - Spin an EP or 10” record

The Tragically Hip "Saskadelphia" (2021 Universal)
Is there a more quintessential Canadian band than The Hip? This EP was released along with the 30th anniversary reissue of Road Apples and includes several tracks that were left off the album at the time. Saskadelphia is the title that was originally slated for that album, meant to evoke the road and the massive amount of touring they did across America at the time, but the label rejected it because it sounded too "Canadian". They then suggested "Road Apples" as a joke (it means "horse shit") but the label actually accepted! Road Apples is such a strong record, it's no wonder that the tracks left off of it were also fantastic. It's an essential EP for any fan, every single track being an absolute banger. Long live Gord! 🍁

Day 9 - Spin a record released in the 90’s or in a year ending in 9

Silkworm - Developer

I have been on a Silkworm kick lately. I was able to pick up OG pressings of Libertine and Firewater via an eBay bundle deal and the. Last week I found an OG copy of Developer, their 1997 album, at the record fair I attended. These guys are pretty 90s. They relocated from Missoula to Seattle in 1990 and Steve Albini produced all of their albums.

Day 11 - Spin an artist with an upcoming release you have on pre-order. Or, spin any record that you pre-ordered.

Cindy Lee "Diamond Jubilee" (2024 W. 25th)
A record that was initially only released on youtube and as a free download, but it nevertheless found its audience very quickly. The album is massive, clocking at 2 and a half hours, with an odd mix of songs that manages to create a timeless, cohesive whole. Loved the album the moment I heard it, but it really shines when played off vinyl. This copy was pre-ordered the moment the vinyl pressing was finally announced several months after the digital release. Despite the length, I've already got three full spins under my belt in the last month, with the 4th happening today. They are from Calgary, the cover image being a nod to Alberta. 🍁
