April 2025 Spin Challenge – Well, this is puzzling…

Day 6 - Spin any splatter / marbled / split wax, picture disc or shaped vinyl

Better Methods – The Thin Air We Breathe

Hard to capture this one effectively, as it's a subtle off white/white combination.

I bought this one blind at a thrift shop in Alberta last summer because I liked the art and the look of the wax itself, and got a good price on it. Couldn't find a ton of information about it online when I looked, either, but it has a 90s alternative rock and punk combined kinda feel, after 2 tracks at least...

Day 8 - Album / song / artist with geographical location in title, lyric or name.

Masta Ace & Marco Polo "Richmond Hill" (2024 Fatbeat Records)
Richmond Hill is a northern suburb of Toronto, where Marco Polo hails from. This is his second collaboration with Masta Ace and includes a bunch of guest spots from the likes of Inspectah Deck, Blu and Arrested Development. This ended up being one of my top 10 records of 2024, garnering a bunch of spins over the year. The album's theme centers around Marco Polo's childhood in Toronto. 🍁

Day 8 - Album / song / artist with geographical location in title, lyric or name.

Just spun this yesterday as part of my playthrough, but happy to play it again.

I visited Ireland last year, and this song definitely came to mind as we were walking through Limerick across the Shannon late at night.

Day 9 - Spin a record released in the 90’s or in a year ending in 9

Jean Leloup "L'Amour Est Sans Pitié" (1990 Audiogram)
Moving to Québec for this pick, the other major cultural backbone of Canada. Montrealer Jean Leloup is one of my favorite French Canadian artists. He hails from the Québec City region but spent a large part of his youth in Africa, particularly in Algeria and Togo. His songs are these little stories where he uses a combination of québécois and parisian slang. This gives them that multicultural cosmopolitan feel that is Montreal. This is his second record, released in 1990 and includes his hit "1990" (released in the midst of the 1st Gulf war), so I thought this selection was quite appropriate for the prompt. His sound is eclectic, a mix of rock at times - Leloup is quite a proficient guitarist - and talk-sing, reminiscent then of Beck or his oft-collaborator Bran Van 3000. 🍁

Gang Starr - Full Clip: A Decade of Gang Starr

I decided to play something from 1999 but on checking I've only got 3 records from that year. This 4LP compilation might be the best, not least as I got it for free from the excellent Can Records in Copenhagen. Super kind owner said it was an investment in our future relationship (maybe he'd seen how much I'd spent at other shops!)
