Cymande "Cymande" (1972 Janus Records, late-90's reissue)
I think this prompt needs a record from the early days of hip-hop, so I went with this one. "Bra" and "Dove" are among the early tracks that Kool Herc mixed two copies of to create a loop.
Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five - The Message I love Hip-Hop and since today is supposedly the 50th anniversary of its creation, I figured I would play something from the early days. I liked the idea of The Get Down but Baz Luhrmann’s style was a bit much and I ended up bailing on the show after the first couple episodes.
"But wait a minute 'dad', did you actually say freedom?
Well, if you're dumb enough to vote, you're f**king dumb enough to believe them.
Because if this country is so goddamned free, then I can burn your f**king flag wherever I damn well please."
I was going to share a pretty great solo KEXP performance of "Mourning Song" with this post but then I came across this Live @ BBC Proms video and it is just exquisite...
Steve Earle & The Dukes - Exit 0 The Wire is one of my all time favorite shows and Earle is one of my favorite Country artists. I picked this album up a couple weeks ago and figured today was a good day to crack it open. (It was sawcut and the cover was a bit scraped but the album was still sealed).
Earle, played a mentor to drug addict Bubbles as he tried to get clean (Bubbles mighta been the only storyline that ended on a relatively positive note when the show wrapped). I feel like he did a fantastic job in the role of Waylon, Earle’s own experience with addiction and recovery helped bring authenticity to role. Earle and his son, Justin Townes Earle would later pop up on David Simon’s next brilliant HBO series, Treme.
The adult version of the main character Ezekiel “Books” Figuero narrated the show through rapping. He was voiced by Nas, though physically portrayed by Daveed Diggs.
And yeah, this prompt was a way for me to celebrate hip-hop’s 50th (albeit a day late lol).
