August 2020 Challenge Thread - The Dog Days of Vinyl Playing

Day 24: Dave Chappelle’s Birthday

I don’t have any comedy albums or any really humorous records so this was a bit of a challenge for me. But I eventually found something.

Father John Misty - God’s Favorite Customer

His most depressing record yet, but there’s still some funny moments on this record (“Mr. Tillman”).

This was my first inclination when I was thinking of funny, his lyrics have always made me laugh.

I really wanna pick up a “Poem Zone” T-shirt...

Day 24: Funny.

This is a mix of comedy skits and audio excerpts from the movie.

August 21 - Senior Citizens Day - Play the oldest album in your collection.

Sam the Sham and The Pharaohs - The Best of Sam the Sham and The Pharaohs

I can't find a year printed anywhere on this record, but Discogs says it's from 1966. That makes it the oldest in my collection by a few years. It took me a while to get around to playing it, because I just didn't think I was in the mood to listen. What an idiot. I forgot how good this whole thing is from first track to last. What fun. Awoooooo!

you're everything a big bad wolf could want

August 22 - Vacation - Play an album that makes you think of the beach.

Jimmy Buffet - A1A

This is more in the Country Western part of Jimmy Buffet's catalogue, but look at my man James Buffét in that beach chair, sittin by the ocean under a nice palm tree. The reason this one reminds me of the beach, though (other than that bitchin cover) is track 1 on Side B "A Pirate Looks At 40", which reminds me of my beach-combing sister in Florida. Once this whole pandemic thing blows over, I'm getting on a plane, throwing on some swim trunks, and diving into that fucking ocean down there. I'm gonna get some mojitos and lay right in the sand like a fucking tourist. I can't wait.

I have been drunk now for over two weeks....

Day 20 - Radio Day
Elvis Costello - This Year's Model

I don't really have any great memories of discovering music on the radio, since I primarily grew up with Clear Channel Classic Rock. Wish we could get any interesting stations here.

Figured my U.S. version of this was appropriate, as it contains Radio, Radio.

DAY 20
HEARD IT ON THE RADIO
Coldplay - Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends
I have a weird childhood story connected with this album I think fits with this theme. One of the strongest music memories I have is being at a hotel pool on vacation in 2008 and hearing the song "Viva La Vida" come over the radio. I was running up somewhere to use a slide and so I was by myself in a place where I could hear only the song being played through the speakers and it echoed through where I was and I was stopped in my tracks. I know it's cool to hate Coldplay nowadays, but at that moment in the summer of 2008, the sound of those strings reverberating through the air hit me and it's one of the first moments in my life I can remember a piece of music affecting me like that.

DAY 21
OLDEST ALBUM
The Clebanoff Strings & Percussion - Exciting Sounds
I'm not 100% certain what the oldest album I own is but this appears to be a contender. There is no year on Discogs but some research suggests it's from 1961, which would make it one of the oldest pressings I own if that is indeed the case.

Day 25: Kiss and makeup day

"Nibbling on bacon, chewing on cheese, Sam says to Suzie, Honey, would you please be my Mrs.
Suzie says yes with her kisses, now he's tickling her fancy, rubbing her toes
Muzzle to muzzle, now, anything goes as they wriggle, Sue starts to giggle

And they whirled. and they twirled and they tango
Singing and jingling a jangle, floating like the heavens above
Looks like muskrat love"

Which gave us one of the stranger videos from the 70's.

Day 24 - Chappelle Day
Jean Grae & Quelle Chris - Everything's Fine

Funny, insightful, lots of comedian cameos. I think Chapelle is probably a fan.

Side note: I just discovered I have a second copy of this and have no memory of where it can from and can't find any purchase history of it. This is a first for me.
