Back In The Day: The Billboard Modern Rock Charts From 35 Years Ago

Just can across this Massive YouTube playlist that supposedly includes EVERY VIDEO EVER PLAYED ON MTV’s 120 MINUTES*! I figure this is a good place to post since there is a great deal of overlap between the Billboard Modern Rock Chart and 120 Minutes. Looking into it. It looks like 120 Minutes predates the Modern Rock Chart by a couple of years (it first aired in 1986).

*scrolling through there is a lot of videos however it does seem like a few are just the song with no video.

B-52’s - “Channel Z”

Tracks that fell out of the top 30
Pere Ubu - “Waiting For Mary”
Adrian Belew -“Oh Daddy
Morrissey - “Interesting Drug”
Prince - “Batdance”
Maria McKee - “I’ve Forgotten What It Was In You”

Youssou N’Dour - “Shakin’ The Tree”

Figures On The Beach - “Accidentally 4th Street”

I have not thought about Ocean Blue in a very longtime. A nice mix of Echo & Bunnymen and jangle pop, but probably 5 years too late to really be big.

Achin' To Be has aged nicely.

I love Ocean Blue. Someone recommended them when I was loving Rolling Blackouts CF. I have a nice copy of their self-title debut on wax. I was super surprised that they were Pennsylvania instead of West London.

Hoodoo Gurus - “Come Anytime”

Tracks that fell out of the top 30
XTC - “King For A Day”
Love & Rockets - “So Alive”
Chris Isaak - “Don’t Make Me Dream About You”

New Additions
Beastie Boys - “Hey Ladies”

Winter Hours - “Smoke Rings”

The Stone Roses - “She Bangs The Drums”

I am super familiar with 2 of the 3 new new additions but had never heard of Winter Hours before. That track will likely have me exploring them further.
Same, Winter Hours is a total blind spot for me. Stan Demeski must have joined between The Feelies and Luna. Listening to the song it is very much an alt-rock take on The Feelies sound.
