🚨 2024 Mid-Year Favourite Albums
(Yes, I know it's only the end of May, please read on..)

In much the same vein as 2023, I am choosing to put out my mid-year favorite albums list a bit earlier than I normally would (maybe this will become my new norm?). I know a lot of you will disagree, but 2024 has been the slowest and weakest year for new music in MANY years.. at least these first five months anyway. I am hopeful for a stronger second half to the year! That being said, there has been an ever so small littering of great albums here and there since January 1st. 10 albums, in fact, and I would like to share those with you here.

Iron and Wine - Light Verse
Julia Holter - Something in the Room She Moves
Knocked Loose - You Won't Go Before You're Supposed To

🚨RBF

Just found Different Type Time on Bandcamp today,  Cavalier's 6th LP. Underground hip-hop, and probably the best hip-hop album I've heard so far this year (granted, I've not been impressed at all this year with the rap and hip-hop world..). If anyone mentioned this one when it dropped back in April, I clearly missed it.

Here’s my top 10 for May:
1. Beth Gibbons - Lives Outgrown
2. Willie Nelson - The Border
3. Brad Mehldau - After Bach II
4. Brad Mehldau - Apres Faure
5. Kamasi Washington - Fearless Movement
6. Msaki x Tubatsi - Synthetic Hearts II
7. Shannon & the Clams - The Moon is in the Wrong Place
8. Tidiane Thiam - Africa Yontii
9. Jessica Pratt - Here in the Pitch
10. Billie Eilish - Hit Me Hard and Soft

I haven't fully ranked my favorite albums of this year yet but Dent May released one of his best records a few months ago called What's For Breakfast...

There were three pre-release videos ahead of the album release

Otherwise I'd probably have Idles, Goth Babe, Vampire Weekend, Real Estate, Dua Lipa, Camera Obscura, The Zutons, and Future Islands on the short list for favorites.

This past Friday was a big day for releases. I’ve also listened to a few other 2024 releases that I am digging too.

01. Rosali - Bite Down
02. Ducks, Ltd. - Harm’s Way
03. Waxahatchee - Tiger’s Blood
04. Real Estate - Daniel
05. Liquid Mike - Paul Bunyan’s Slingshot
06. Sierra Ferrell - Trail Of Flowers
07. David Nance - David Nance & Mowed Sound
08. J Mascis - What Do We Do Now
09. Mannequin Pussy - I Got Heaven
10. Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Dume

I might be cheating by adding Dume, and I did penalize it a bit, otherwise it would probably be fighting for the top spot; since it’s a reworking of the Neil’s 1975 album, Zuma and while this was the first time it was released as a standalone album it was originally conceived as part of NYA, Vol. II which was released back 2020 so maybe it shouldn’t count at all.
01. Rosali - Bite Down
02. Jimmy Montague - Tomorrow’s Coffee
03. Ducks Ltd. - Harm’s Way
04. Liquid Mike - Paul Bunyan’s Slingshot
05. Waxahatchee - Tiger’s Blood
06. Jessica Pratt - Here In The Pitch
07. Real Estate - Daniel
08. DIIV - Frog In Boiling Water
09. Sierra Farrell - Trail Of Flowers
10. David Nance - David Nance & Mowed Sound

Others I’ve enjoyed: J Mascis - What Do We Do Now; Mannequin Pussy - I Got Heaven; Knocked Loose - You Won’t Go Before You’re Supposed To; Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Dume

Is TOPS confirmed to be releasing an album this year? I hope so as I feel alive was one of my favorite albums of 2020.

silly me...completely forgot to add Glass Beams to the EPs list...very stoked to see them perform tomorrow evening

Shannon & the Clams
I've thought about buying the vinyl of their new album the moon is in the wrong place but I'm not sure if I want to get it. Of the singles I liked everything but bean fields. I heard the full album during the listening party and I liked the hourglass, ufo, so lucky and what your missing. I didn't hate the other tracks but I didn't like anything enough to rush out and get the vinyl. I haven't listened to the album since the listening party. If I did buy it I'd get the indie variant.
