Best Music 🎶 of 2024!

This is my top most listened to albums that came out in April.
  1. Shabaka - Perceive Its Beauty, Acknowledge Its Grace
  2. Maggie Rogers - Don’t Forget Me
  3. Taylor Swift - The Tortured Poets Department
  4. Bruno Berle - No Reino Dos Afetos 2
  5. St Vincent - All Born Screaming
  6. Vampire Weekend - Only God Was Above Us
  7. Bridget Kearney - Comeback Kid
  8. Marta Sanchez Trio - Perpetual Void
  9. Iron and Wine - Light Verse
  10. Sinkane - We Belong

There’s a couple of things that won’t make my best of top ten (Swift and Kearney) for sure and Iron and Wine and St Vincent aren’t even a week old so they will probably rank higher. Need to do some more thinking before I table and there are a couple of things I should probably give another listen or two. Kind of a stacked month.

New Kishi Bashi is fucking amazing. I can not wait to listen to the vinyl when it shows up. I am so hyped and hope he isn’t hitting the triangle during my vacation in October because I really want to see what he does with this live.

It’s very high concept/dystopian and the absolute most fun I have had listening to a record all year long. I am sure I will only grow to love more with each listen. I was shaking my ass while taking the trash to the front. (It was dark but same would have happened if it was noon)

This is the first thing that is probably neck and neck with Amaro Freitas for AOTY so far.

The new single Colorful State out today is one of the standout tracks, but also gives a good sense of what the entire album holds musically. My initial reaction to the album was, "Kishi made his ELO album." So then it wasn't surprising to read in the description that he was inspired by ELO, along with other 70s/80s bands. This one is big and funky. There is a long sax solo in one of the tracks! So yeah, I agree @TrainFan73 that it will be fun to see how he pulls it off live.

It's great for what it is, but fans who prefer the Kishi tunes focused more on violin and looping, like tracks on 151a or Lighght probably will be less into this one. This new album is more Sonderlust, and then springboard from that vibe into higher energy and fuller instrumentation.

Regardless of where this ends up ranked in my personal take on his discography, I'm always grateful for more Kishi Bashi! And of course, when that tour gets announced (prob today), I'll corral as many friends as possible to see him live, because he's absolutely amazing every single time.
