December 2020 Challenge Thread: Let's Go Out With A Bang (The return of the raffle!)

Fuck I have alot of catching up to do lol

Day 7 - Cool story bro

20201210_233902.jpg

Anna Meredith - Varmints

I went to see Anna in February of 2018 in this incredibly small venue. I went with a friend and my brother and we were in a crowd of about 10 people, the majority of who went out in support of the local band who were opening. When Anna first got on Me and my group were sitting off to the side watching. I noticed she kept looking at us, so I convinced my brother and friend to get up front and start dancing during the second song. After she finished the song she looks at us and says, “Thanks for joining us on the dance floor”. Needless to say, but the show was awesome and is easily in my top 5 of that year. Afterwards she came out and said hi to everyone and we started talking. She said she noticed me singing along to every word and she thanked me for being a fan. She then told me I could buy a copy of Varmints off her store and if I emailed them she would sign it for me

So, after her tour was over I went on the site and ordered the record. I then got it and saw that instead of writing my name “Matt” she wrote “Max”. I found this fucking hysterical and its one of my favorite records in my collection

Day 11: The Total Package
Favorite packaging for an album

Lots of great packaging out there. I'll go with my most recent.

A 7 LP behemoth with the records as well as the large accompanying book held in a bound, book-style volume that looks like it belongs on a library shelf..

Tom Petty - 'Wildflowers' & All The Rest

When you open it up, it starts playing a snippet from the title track, like one of those fancy greeting cards. Very cool idea, but it ended up warping the crud out of both records.

Day 9: Most Valuable

Going with my most recent post in the What's The Most Valuable Record In Your Collection? thread, and sorted by Median price, it would be The Beatles Mono Box. But since I don't count box sets, next would be the 6 LP The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo Box Set....again a box set and just too unwieldy of a set to get out again so soon.

But that S/T is usually competing with this one for 2nd in my list anyway - so at any given time the could swap spots. - Median $$ for both is at about $550.00. This is also the top of my Max sorted value, too (after The Beatles box and a Metallica box) - someone paid $963.84 for it...supposedly.

My copy is NOT worth that as it survived a few dorm stays and moves in college and after. It's not in bad shape, but not in the best either. It plays fine - the records are VG+ - jacket would be Good - maybe Good+ (I've actually never graded anything - so I don't really know)

Even though I own this original pressing, I'd love to see an official reissue of this and all other TOOL albums.

A little background on this release -

Tool released this vinyl edition 2 weeks before it was released on CD - by the time it was released on CD Volcano replaced BMG as a label - the cat # scheme they used also changed. The releases with the 72445 catalog number pre-date the change to Volcano Entertainment, so any "original" vinyl releases with Volcano listed came later than this original pressing.

They also made the labels a bit easier to read the small print on the later issues.

There is unfortunately no runout info except the cat #

Day 11: The Total Package

Thelonious Monk - Palo Alto (Impulse!, 2020 VMP Limited Coloured Exclusive)

I have a few records which I think are fantastic packages (Resonance Records releases, the Cherry Tree exclusives, etc) but I decided to go for a relatively new pick-up today, the superb Palo Alto. Im a sucker for a decent story and this one certainly has it! I really like the additions of the poster, booklet, etc which are reproductions of the original items. Really nice touch which goes to show why the physical format is better than digital imo.

Day 11 - The Total Package

Metronomy "Metronomy Forever" (2019 Because Music, deluxe edition)

I decided to highlight this one today, because the art is so great, like on the 4-panel fold-out sleeve.

IMG_1111.JPG

It includes 3xLPs, the album on orange vinyl is on LPs 1 & 2and the third includes demos on green vinyl.

Plus there was this signed print which I love.

The album is pretty solid too.

Day 5: Bathtub Party Day (apparently it's a real thing haha)
Spin a party album!

Girl Talk - Feed The Animals

Well, I played All Day last month, so might as well party to this one this month! And by party I mean "get my ass kicked by Ring Fit Adventure". Snarf.

Day 6: Most Interesting Color Variant
Show us those crazy color variants

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - I'm In Your Mind Fuzz

This is the first KGLW album that really really hooked me and made me dive deep into the band. As the Gizz fellas albums are so diverse, I can't really pin down a favorite, but if you put a gun to my head and made me choose? First, I'd call you a psychopath, then I'd probably pick this album. I love this variant because it fits so well with the cover and overall atmosphere of the album.

Jeff Tweedy - Warm/Warmer

I am not sure I am able to fully capture it here but I found Jeff Tweedy’s compilation release of Warm/Warmer to be quite appealing. The jacket is wrapped in canvas similar to a hardbound book. It also contains a bound liner notes written by renowned author, George Saunders along with accompanying photographs and album lyrics.

soccer mommy - color theory

16077133744771505444829543610192.jpg

Within a single-pocket jacket, it came enclosed with a sticker pack, printed inner, and a folded poster (in addition to the split color LP). It may not be the tri-color pinwheel available initially, but still a nice package for a single pocket jacket.

Day 11: The total package

Iron & Wine - Beast Epic

This is the deluxe edition of the album, but I think the packaging is basically the same as the standard, minus the background of the cover. It's nothing too fancy, but it's a really nice package to hold. First off, I love the cover art and its corresponding back cover. (Though, as an obsessive, it looks like he's playing a Gibson based on the pickguard and I've never seen him play a Gibson acoustic.) Nice, heavy gatefold stock. The lyric sheet continues the theme with a neat thread binding. Record is well pressed and flat (RTI, I believe). All for a reasonable price. Like most of my favourite packages, it's a Sub Pop release. For some reason, it seems like most other labels haven't figured out how to make nice packages for good records at a decent price.

Day 11: The Total Package Favorite packaging for an album

Savage Republic - Recordings From Live Performance, 1981 - 1983

Savage Republic originally included Bruce Lichter, a graphic designer and printer. The packages for the 1980’s albums were all very ornate yet industrial looking. This is a 2x10in package plus a copy of their first single (3rd printing Savage Republic - Film Noir ) which also include a couple of actual postage stamps that they produced throughout their early career.

Four Tet - Sixteen Oceans

I decided to choose a jacket I really like from this year, so I went with this one which complements the pleasant cover image with some nice UV patterning for a shimmering effect that reflects the music within.

Day 10: First Day of Hanukkah

Simon and Garfunkel - Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme

Two fun facts:
I've used parsley sage rosemary and thyme on my turkey breast in the Instant Pot the last two Thanksgivings, and it's fantastic.

Homeward Bound made me cry at the Paul Simon concert two summers ago.
