December 2020 Challenge Thread: Let's Go Out With A Bang (The return of the raffle!)

Day 12: Wildcard
Pick your own theme for today and explain why

A double theme - I've been really jonesin' lately for live music - my last show was 3-12-20 and I was used to seeing 2 to 3 shows a month - and it's Tom Verlaine's birthday.

Double ducks, one rock.

Television - Live At The Old Waldorf, San Francisco 6/29/78

Day 14: Decisions, Decisions
If you could only keep one...

Welp, this one is the devil.

If the intention is to only keep one record, it ain't gonna happen at my house. I am but a mortal man.

The best I can offer is keeping one artist. And that's an easy decision - Neil Young. Extensive catalog. Effortlessly changes styles like a musical chameleon. Variety. Longevity.

With the largest part of my LP pie, Neil's my guy. Not ashamed...

Day 14: Decisions, Decisions - If you could only keep one...

Durand Jones & The Indications - Durand Jones & The Indications

This one checks all of the boxes for me. It's one of my favorite albums of all time and is full of jams from beginning to end. There are upbeat songs and slow jams, and no matter what mood I'm in I always love listening to this album. Plus, on the collector side of things, it's a beautiful variant that matches the album art perfectly, and it's signed. Not an easy decision to make, but ultimately this would be the one for me!

Day 14: Decisions, Decisions
If you could only keep one..
.

Well this is a fun category. After some thought, I think it's this one. I would imagine if you're telling me to keep just one album, I need it to serve a lot of purposes. Of course, it needs to be good, but I want it to make me feel and I want a variety of sounds, tempos, and even styles. This is why a couple other choices, which I may listen to more, weren't used here.

This is not only one of my favorite albums of all time (it's very, VERY high on my Top 50 list), but has a little bit of everything. It has one of the saddest songs of all time (Elephant), one of the greatest love songs of all time (Cover Me Up), as well as deep, high quality, clever, and often blunt lyricism throughout the entire piece. It's been several years since its release, and I'm still finding songs, lyrics, and moments in this record that hit me at my heart and let me reflect.

I think the man is among the best musicians we have right now, and think he consistently puts out great work, but I don't know if he'll ever top Southeastern and I'm not sure I ever want him to. Plus...do I really need an excuse to spin this one ever? No, I don't, but I'll take it.

Day 14: Decisions, Decisions

Lee Morgan ‎– Leeway (Blue Note, 1961 First Mono Pressing)

I have mentioned several times before that I have a great love (obsession?) for Lee Morgan's music and I would really struggle to choose just one, so taking a leaf out of @Yer Ol' Uncle D book I will just choose a random one whilst showing off the rest of his albums. Believe it or not I have added quite a few more since the photo was taken earlier on in the year.

Day 14 - Decisions, Decisions

The Clash "Hits Back" (2013 Epic, red vinyl limited edition)

Ok, this is tough. I really can't live with just one record. If I could, I wouldn't be here. I almost copped-out and selected the "Who Can I Be Now?" Bowie box set. But that's sort of cheating, plus I don't have time to listen to that whole set today.

So I needed an album that could hold my attention forever and includes a wide variety of music. I landed on this record. "London Calling" is the #2 LP on my top 50, but this puppy is that and much more. Three massive LP's of absolute fire. The whole thing is based on Joe Strummer's setlist for their show at Brixton Fairdeal on July 10, 1982. Sounds pretty great too.

Day 14: Decisions, Decisions If you could only keep one...

Miles Davis - In A Silent Way

If you asked me on another day, I might not have said this album, but there would be a good chance it would be a Miles record (second only to my love for Bowie). In A Silent Way is an amazing record and one I keep coming back to. I had listened to very little jazz when a friend introduced it to me. I was completely blown away the first time I heard it.

Day 14: Decisions, Decisions If you could only keep one...

I thought about this wayyy too long. I had to come to a way to make a decision so I am going with
The Rolling Stones - Exile on Main Street

I've been listening to a lot of Stones lately, and after giving my #1 ranking to Let it Bleed in my top 50, I'm out to prove myself wrong. So I will sit and listen to this gem over and over until it rises from 3rd to 1st.
