December 2020 Challenge Thread: Let's Go Out With A Bang (The return of the raffle!)

Day 11: The Total Package
Favorite packaging for an album

I went with New West 20th Anniversary Boxset.
I really like how they did this for a few reasons. A sturdy box, a booklet with pictures and info, (hand numbered is always nice) and getting listed in the credits is pretty cool.

But what I like most is how they chose the music. It's three double LPs called Family, Friends and The Road Less Traveled. Fans chose the material for Friends, NW artists chose the songs for Family and George Fontaine Sr put together an aural history of the label.

This is so listenable, so many artists I like and a few that were new to me...it's all great.

Day 11: The Total Package

The original pressing of this soundtrack is one of my favorites, but this reissue does a much better job overall. The bigger artwork, die-cut jacket, 2 x 45 RPM, colored vinyl (if that's your thing), expanded soundtrack etc...

Various ‎– Manhunter (Music From The Motion Picture Soundtrack)
Waxwork Records ‎– WW039, 1986/2016

2x45RPM
Red Marbled "Red Dragon" variant

Day 12: Wildcard

This damn stack of new records is getting bigger each day instead of smaller...so I'm playing the one that has been sitting here the longest. Spending my record playing time catching up with this thread is keeping me from getting through this stack, but not today. I will continue this theme for the whole day in the Spinnin' thread.

I do know why this album has sat here for as long as it has - one REALLY needs to be in the right mood for The Residents - and I just haven't been there.

The Residents ‎– Icky Flix (The Original Soundtrack Recording)
New Ralph Too/Cherry Red ‎– NRTLP 014D, 2001/2020

Re-recorded versions of songs that was on the 2001 DVD as alternative soundtracks to the group's videos.

#RSD20 - limited to 1500 on Yellow and Orange vinyl

Cut by Lex van Coeverden
Pressed at MPO

Tubby Hayes - Mexican Green (Fontana, 2019 Gearbox Records Pressing)

Can a single artist be a theme? I have been really digging Tubby Hayes lately, binging on his records and reading his biography. I picked up the fantastic (it really is FANTASTIC) box set of his Fontana recordings this week after our very own @Mr Moore pointed out that it was on sale at a store in London. I have a few already and have been comparing them as I go along, but one which I didn't have is Mexican Green, which is often referred to as the bookend to his greatest recordings.

Day 12: Wildcard - Pick your own theme for today and explain why

My theme is honoring someone who has passed.

I lost a good friend this week.
I've known him since the late 80s when we worked together. We immediately clicked on music (and Red Wings hockey.) He was into all kinds of music and absolutely loved live shows, so he always supported local acts. After he relocated to Traverse City he spent a lot of his free nights checking out the young funky jam bands that played at his favorite pub, Kilkenny's, or the more notable acts that played at Union Street Station. I wish I had some Steppin' in It on vinyl to post, that was a local favorite of his. Or some Colonel Bruce Hampton would be great; we listened to Mirrors of Embarrassment a zillion times together.

But this works well too; Delbert McClinton is one of his longtime favorites, and it being a live album is also fitting.
This one's for you Brian, damn I'm going to miss you. 🍻

Day 12: Wildcard

This RSD Black Friday release just came in yesterday, and is one of those records I've really been looking forward to revisiting. I think we've all experienced personal and widespread loss this year, but the quarantine has definitely brought my family together in finding activities to keep us together and our general communication and respect for one another. So I'll go with Magic and Loss as my theme.

Day 12 - Wildcard

The Brooks "Any Day Now" (2020 Underdog Records, Wax Buyers version)

I'm choosing to highlight one of my favorite discoveries of 2020. This record was selected as an ROTM at the Wax Buyers Club and features a super funky bunch of locals from Montreal. This one is for fans of Parliament/Funkadelic. If you like all things funky like I do, do yourself a favor and don't sleep on this.

Day 12: Wildcard (Theme -> Album I Didn't Expect to Enjoy on First Listen)

Lana Del Rey - Norman Fucking Rockwell!

She's a social media nightmare. She has made ubiquitous questionable decisions just this year alone. She had been off my radar for many years starting from Born To Die and her music had never resonated with me.
But this album...it clicked. It feels like her first truly good album and didn't stick to amd rely on the previous tropes of her music. It is a modern day singer/songwriter album firing on all cylinders.

I have always sort of liked her music, but agree that this was the first album of hers that just clicked instantly. It is an instant classic.

She's definitely one of those artists who are provocative for the sake of being provocative in some of the most obnoxious ways possible. Its just exhausting at this point.

Day 11 - Total Package

Courtesy of my girlfriend's growing collection. Not my favorite music and there is one infuriating design flaw (no ID of Sides), but great album cover, sleeves, and a full on screenplay with song cues and clever design. Glad it was repressed
