December 2021 Vinyl Spin Challenge Thread: ‘Tis The Season Of Giving

Day 21 - One-Hit Wonder
Play something lesser-known from someone mostly known as a one-hit wonder to celebrate Gangnam Style becoming the first YouTube video to hit 1 billion streams on this day 9 years ago

I know these guys have lots of hits, but I think just one song got much play off of this.

Bobby McFerrin – Simple Pleasures

While this is the album with his "one hit" on it, this is the only Bobby McFerrin I currently have on wax. I do have nearly everything he's ever released on CD but no CD player in the house! :ROFLMAO:

Most people only know the one song that kicks this album off and many falsely think he killed himself, but Bobby McFerrin is an absolute genius and a treasure. I'm still bummed about missing my chance to see him a couple of years ago thanks to being financially bled by unnecessary and unwarranted litigation. 😕

This is one of my faves right here:

Day 18 - Wrath/Envy

The White Stripes - Live at the Detroit Institute of Arts

Not angry per se, but there's a level of aggression in live White Stripes that give tunes like The Big Three Killed My Baby a certain edge that makes this one work for the category.

Falco "Vienna Calling (The Tourist Version)" (1985 A&M, 12" Maxi Single)
This fits the bill perfectly. Falco is well-known for his mid-eighties hit "Rock Me Amadeus". Here's the maxi single of his secondary hit "Vienna Calling".

Brilliant lyrics too.

Hellooo, oo-oh-oh,
Vienna Calling, ai-i-ai-i-ai.

Day 21: One-Hit Wonder

This artist isn’t mostly known as a one-hit wonder (and I’m sure I’d be punched out by at least a few people here if I were to ever actually call him that) but he fits the criteria pretty well.

Lou Reed - The Blue Mask

Lou Reed only ever had one charting hit on the Billboard Hot 100 and it’s easy to guess what song it is.

Also I didn’t read the prompt very clearly at first and I originally thought today’s theme was to play a one-hit wonder. I nearly brought out my copy of Johnny Hates Jazz’s “Shattered Dreams” (though they’re technically not a OHW either).

Everyone knows the hit. Per today's challenge, here's a not as successful tune.

Doug Fieger's picture on this cover always gives me the creeps.

Fiona Apple - The Idler Wheel...

Going a similar route as @Wicked Dreamer . Fiona wouldn’t generally be considered a “one-hit wonder”, but she’s technically only had one hit.

Day 22 - Abroad
Play something from outside your home country

I was born in Argentina and we moved to Brazil when I was 3. When I was a kid we used to spend every school vacation in Argentina. I feel kind of foreign in both countries, so I sometimes wonder what is my home country? Anyway, I decided to pay homage to my grandma who was from Spain.

Day 22 - Abroad
Play something from outside your home country

Just picked this up and wanted to give it another spin, so it worked out well for today's challenge. Similar to @gafacaode, but with different countries, I was born in the US but grew up in Ecuador and lived/worked all over Latin America in my first career. As a result I never really felt a part of either my home country or my adopted ones. But since so many who have similar experiences feel the same way I've always thought of us all as part of our own nomadic/borderless country.

Ego Kill Talent - The Dance Between Extremes

This is a Brazilian rock band that I snagged on a $5 Amazon deal last week. Well worth the gamble, it's a decent rock album!
