Definitive Audiophile pressings

Anybody have the 2014 Ace Records pressing of Pieces of a Man by Gil Scott Heron? (Or the Rough Trade exclusive from this past year?)

Rounded up some more info about this upcoming 2x45 AAA reissue…

It’s pressed at GZ. Should have a somewhat similar sound to the 2014 pressing on account of both being relatively flat cuts from the masters. But better source (AAA instead of from 24/192) and 45.

Also forgot—it’s not limited to a number per se…initial pressing run of 3,000 though. Potentially repressed if it sells well.

I have the 2014 Ace. I haven't played it in a while but I can this weekend and report back. Don't remember ever having any issues with it and it sounding just fine.

Wait, a 2x45 of Pieces of a Man?

I had the Rough Trade but the sound was kind of dull and flat. I have this 70’s reissue but it is in VG condition. https://www.discogs.com/release/6421500-Gil-Scott-Heron-Pieces-Of-A-Man

Stomped the Rough Trade issue. I would really like to get a George Piros issue (OG or reissue) but I haven’t been able to snag a clean and affordable copy.

As of now there's no inclination of any Billy Joel one steps right? I have the mofi greatest hits, stranger, turnstiles, and nylon curtain from that crazy timmy discog sale and am scared for my wallet if they're ever announced.

There are about 20 one steps in the works. If they do Billy Joel, don’t think it would be for years.

Miss you Timmybooboo! I got a bunch of the Miles MoFis and some other great stuff from him. Should have gotten more…

And dull and flat is what I’m afraid of…the guy who worked on this and said it sounds great also said it will sound similar to the 2014 (which I think is the same as the RT). Says it’s a flat transfer from the tapes…they did the funkadelic maggot brain reissue recently which was awful

The ROG STP - Core is the definitive pressing of this album. Best it's ever sounded. Every track on side c especially stood out as insanely detailed with great separation. ROG crushed this one. Worth every penny.
I finally compared the ROG to the MOV. The MOV still is nice, but the ROG is just better. I agree with you 100% and am really glad I grabbed the ROG at the $60 amazon price. I’m going to sell my clear MOV. If anyone here wants it, please PM me.

Oh God it's them? Yeah no, wait for the reviews.

That Maggot Brain reissue is the most disappointing record I own.

Same label but different people involved + AAA + 45. Definitely have some hesitancy on my side too...the reviews on discogs of the 2014 press of POAM by the same folks seems surprisingly good but i take those with a grain of salt.

Comparison of the ROG Superfly remaster by KPG with a 1972 original pressed by Sonic Recording Products.

So I did a lot of back-to-back A/B comparisons and these are my impressions. My original copy is pretty beat up, especially the sleeve, but the record itself plays a solid VG/VG+ with some pops here and there, so it remains a solid player copy.

Packaging. The reissue is a gatefold tip-on jacket and comes with a bunch of extras not present in the original (liner notes, poster, slip mat). It's a fantastic package. The original has a die-cut cover which is quite cool because you can flip it back to see the full Curtis head shot. The original came with an advertising sheet. I tend to favor tip-on jackets in general, because they feel so classy. But the die-cut here is neat too. Both are great in their own way. And ROG certainly didn't skimp on the extras. The liner notes are an especially welcome addition.

Pressing. The ROG is pressed at Record Industry as usual for them. My copy is quiet and flawless despite the colored vinyl. My original is also an excellent pressing but it does have some pops, although not that bad considering the age.

Sound. This is where it gets difficult. Overall, I'd say the remaster has more clarity at the high end. Vocals are comparable to my ear (admittedly, this is not usually something I'm great at discerning though, but I didn't notice anything glaring). The Original has an overall better, lusher low end and softer highs, which makes the whole presentation a little less bright. But this difference at the low end doesn't hold for all the tracks. The bass is lusher and deeper to my ear on the original in Little Child, Pusherman, Junkie Chase, Eddie You Should Know Better. I don't hear much of a difference in No Thing On Me and Think but then it seems to be comparatively boosted in the remastered versions of Freddie's Dead, Give Me Your Love and Superfly. In fact those are solid winners on the remaster. Anyway, my conclusion is that both versions differ in sound profile but they are both excellent, each having slight advantages over the other in certain areas. And the bottom line is that this new remaster is a great copy to own and play.
