Comparison of the ROG Superfly remaster by KPG with a 1972 original pressed by Sonic Recording Products.
So I did a lot of back-to-back A/B comparisons and these are my impressions. My original copy is pretty beat up, especially the sleeve, but the record itself plays a solid VG/VG+ with some pops here and there, so it remains a solid player copy.
Packaging. The reissue is a gatefold tip-on jacket and comes with a bunch of extras not present in the original (liner notes, poster, slip mat). It's a fantastic package. The original has a die-cut cover which is quite cool because you can flip it back to see the full Curtis head shot. The original came with an advertising sheet. I tend to favor tip-on jackets in general, because they feel so classy. But the die-cut here is neat too. Both are great in their own way. And ROG certainly didn't skimp on the extras. The liner notes are an especially welcome addition.
Pressing. The ROG is pressed at Record Industry as usual for them. My copy is quiet and flawless despite the colored vinyl. My original is also an excellent pressing but it does have some pops, although not that bad considering the age.
Sound. This is where it gets difficult. Overall, I'd say the remaster has more clarity at the high end. Vocals are comparable to my ear (admittedly, this is not usually something I'm great at discerning though, but I didn't notice anything glaring). The Original has an overall better, lusher low end and softer highs, which makes the whole presentation a little less bright. But this difference at the low end doesn't hold for all the tracks. The bass is lusher and deeper to my ear on the original in Little Child, Pusherman, Junkie Chase, Eddie You Should Know Better. I don't hear much of a difference in No Thing On Me and Think but then it seems to be comparatively boosted in the remastered versions of Freddie's Dead, Give Me Your Love and Superfly. In fact those are solid winners on the remaster. Anyway, my conclusion is that both versions differ in sound profile but they are both excellent, each having slight advantages over the other in certain areas. And the bottom line is that this new remaster is a great copy to own and play.
