Definitive Audiophile pressings

I don’t know where else to post this but it feel like everyone here can relate. I popped into MikeowneroftheingrooveinPhoenixArizona’s Whatnot stream to see what ridiculous prices people are paying for his records. Immediately saw someone pay $51 for a copy of The Eagles’ “One Of These Nights.” Figured “oh it’s probably a damaged one step.” Nope, just a regular ‘ol common pressing of the album.

$51….

This is a $10 album at most.

I've said this before, but when I was at his store a few years back, basically anything half decent was at Discogs median prices. There were absolutely no deals to be had. And that was like 5 years ago, pre low level internet fame.

I believe that, but this is just a straight up auction starting at $1. I feel like people want to own it because it came from his shop…

But this the extra special One of Those Nights pressing. 🙄

Yeah I mean maybe a woman in there. And someone younger. Both of whom will argue like fuck with the geography teachers currently making the picks.
Jim Davis makes the picks. He approves everything, he owns it. They can bring in young women, hip-hoppers, rocking chair grannies...Jim Davis makes the decisions, and he is in it for sales. Even more brutally than Chad.

Fuckin' Jim Davis.

There’s a pretty good story in the Washington Post about vinyl and the search of the perfect sound. Not sure I am legally allowed to copy paste the article here though.

he does come off as a jerk, that's for sure. Also, pretty funny to see Fremer claiming he was on the case on the whole MoFi debacle, and just shy of revealing the whole thing himself, but got scooped.

Those auctions like Mike is running now are just a big FOMO fest with the only real winner being the auctioneer. These goofy "Brown Starfish Records" people who have been doing it on facebook for awhile are really just mostly flippers/resellers buying locally from grannies who don't know anything about vinyl, and they know vinyl is hot right now. People get caught up in the bidding over a $5 record. These same people would overspend at their local record store but at least they're supporting a local business. Whatnot is just capitalizing on the issues with ebay.

I appreciate the things that Mike brings to the community but let's not forget he's a business at the end of the day, and at times it does feel a bit disingenuous.

Oh of course. It’s very entertaining seeing what people will shell out money for.

You should see some of the Facebook auctions people do for records, especially some of the MoFi/audiophile ones. People pay absolutely insane prices on stuff, even things that are in stock and not OOP. I guess people get caught up in the rush of winning an auction live. I've seen stuff that was in stock at Music Direct for $40 sell for well over $150 a few times on those facebook auctions. The facebook "waffles" also just seem to print money for the people running them. Saw a guy clear almost $3,000 for the Sgt Peppers UHQR a few weeks ago simply by selling raffle tickets for $30 a piece.

Yeah whatever about auctions raffles for things like this feel inherently shady and with more than a little sniff of profiteering about it. Not a fan. Unless it’s for charity of course.

Also, whilst probably not even remotely possible to regulate, I’d wonder just how legit they are in respect of gambling law.

Bingo.

When Mike first started advertising Whatnot as DEALZ EVERYWHERE, I signed up with the highest level of skepticism possible. More than half of the auctions I entered were VINYLS, VIBES, AND SHEEEESH gen z cringe.

Mike's auctions usually have some great records, but his Youtube crowd does nothing but drive up the prices with FOMO. And I'm saying about FOMO as someone who is still subscribed to VMP :ROFLMAO:. If I see something in his auction that looks appealing, I'm better off heading straight to Discogs. But hey man, if he can make an extra penny on Whatnot I can't judge the hustle.

There’s a reason raffles are illegal in the US without a permit, and why only charities/fundraisers are allowed to do them. How people on FB continue to get away with it by calling them “waffles” is beyond me. It’s such a scam. I know several people that will pay top dollar for stuff at shops or elsewhere bc they know they can throw them up and make almost doubly by having 30 people pay $15 for a chance to win.

Definitely not legal, which is why they say "waffle" on facebook, and only using paypal friends and family/cashapp/venmo. they tell people not to use the word raffle at all in the payment notes. I don't think Facebook and other places really care enough to regulate it. But some of these people are making a LOT of money on these. Pretty sure it's one guy's full-time job just to do an online auction every week of MoFi and other audiophile stuff. He buys on MoFi/Music Direct, then auctions them off as soon as they arrive. That same guy has had his venmo shut down a few times.
