Definitive Audiophile pressings

@Ghost now I know why that Ole doesn’t have great reviews. The BG in the deadwax isn’t Bernie’s initials. It’s the plating code from optimal. Looks like a lift from the mono Coltrane box set. Mastered by John Webber at AIR from digital.

SYEOR deets:

Billy Cobham Spectrum was cut by KG from flat analog master, pressed at Optimal.

The Coltrane "Ole" is mono - a breakout from the Coltrane mono box, pressed at Optimal.

Genesis Selling England is the Nick Davis remix/Universal version.

Ramones Subterranean Jungle is a breakout from the Sire Box.

Yes Fragile is the KG analog cut from a few years back, now in a direct-to-board jacket. Pressed at Record Industry.

Otis Redding Sings Soul Ballads is a breakout from the mono box.

Velvet Underground Loaded is pressed at Optimal from existing metal. Someone said: “has the full-lengths of SJ/RAR/NA.”

Warren Zevon Quiet Normal Life is pressed at Memphis/GZ from metal transferred from Record Industry. (KG cut?)

Hot Tuna Burgers is pressed at AtoZ/GZ in the US and Optimal for ROW. Cut from Archived Audio files at the plant.

Curtis Mayfield Live cut by KG from analog tapes, pressed at Precision.

Curtis Mayfield Curtis cut/pressed at Precision from archived audio. Not sure who pressed this ex-US.

B-52's Whammy cut from archived audio at Precision.

ZZ Top Eliminator cut from archived audio at Memphis, pressed at Memphis for US.GZ ROW.

Thinking that means this new press will sound better?

nah i think it's the same exact plates as that one you read reviews of. people just thought it was Bernie Grundman since BG was in the deadwax, but it's just an Optimal plating code apparently.

i'd go for the ORG 45 if you don't mind 45s. Otherwise maybe find an old version of a solid digital stream.

The ORG 45 IMO is senseless, breaking up the title track into two sides simply destroys it, and is surely not the way Coltrane meant for it to be experienced.

I would expect one of these days an AAA 33 will turn up.

yea overall i agree. the sound quality is great on it but many titles on 45 mess with the flow and this is one of them.

not sure the state of the tapes but hopefully an AAA comes up at some point. i have an early mono but think stereo might be better on this one?

Do you have one of the QRP's from 2015? I would not expect much could beat that one. Unless you're looking for all the extras because that price is great.

I have the regular 2022 single disc edition, which I assume is the same as the one inside this box, and it’s 100% fantastic. The lowest Discogs price for that isn’t that much lower than your sale price for the box. (I have not heard the 2015 QRP edition so can’t compare 2022 to that)

Yeah, I took a look at that one also. DMM, right? I've gone ahead and purchased what's supposed to be the 2015 200g pressing. I'll see how that goes and return it if it isn't what it claims to be. Thanks!

EDIT: Should have mentioned that the 2022 single-disc DMM pressing can be purchased from uDiscover for $27.98 with their current 30% discount. That seems like a great deal if it's as good as you say.

The discount shows up in the cart:

Just received the order from Amazon and it looks like it's this one: Rush - Moving Pictures

All identifiers are exactly the same except for the runouts, which are completely different and not listed anywhere on discogs. I added a comment to the listing with that info. There seem to be quite a few different DMM pressings of this record, and I have no way of knowing where the one I received was pressed. Guess I'll give it a listen and decide whether to keep it, but unless it's flawed somehow, I probably will.

The numbers on yours seem like a GZ press to me. Your ears will be the judge in the end...

John Coltrane - Olé Coltrane I've got this one and despite all the negatives that could be thrown at it , it sounds great !! I agree that the 45 is pointless, breaking up the title track is a no deal . Love this album. IU think the Stereo is much better, especially with the twin Bass .

That’s why I figured the stereo is better on this one too even though most times I prefer Trane in mono

The BG 45 Ole is incredible; pressed at Pallas is icing.
He did an amazing job.
Yes cutting a ~19 min song in half is not good but the SQ makes up for any TT hate.

Edit: Would love to get a ST, but the mono hits pretty good.
