Definitive Audiophile pressings

I’ve bought 2 and ordered one online and it’s the 8th…

But in general I think the CD player and making certain artists CD should make a huge difference. The amount I bought last year that was dupes of CDs was quite frankly frightening!
Hey—we’re the same so far! My rule at least this month is to sell any amount that I purchase. Listening to downloads and streaming has helped a lot.

Yeah I like to stream a lot in the car but at home it just doesn’t seem to scratch that itch. But equally I can’t afford/store all the music I’d like on vinyl only. Plus I already own so many CDs. I’m hoping to keep under 100 new records added this year. We will see with the CDs.

I think CDs haven’t scratched the same itch listening to vinyl has. If I want to listen to physical media I’d rather listen to vinyl. And when I don’t want to get up to change the music I use streaming 😂

I think it’s a mix of already owning over a thousand of them and the fact that it involves going and picking and choosing and taking something out. Streaming seems almost disposable in a way, I just don’t engage with it in the same way. I also don’t really work from home anymore so when I’m listening to music at home I’m choosing to do it and engage, it’s isn’t background to work.

Also CDs play the whole album before you have to change. I’m not that lazy!

I sold a bunch of my CDs awhile ago and have an account at something similar to what.cd so can get nearly any CD rip I want. Any CDs I buy I end up ripping to add to my Roon library haha

Roon just got too expensive for how much I was using it and still felt inconsequential like streaming. Unless I’m after something in particular I just find myself endlessly wondering what I want to listen to and staring at the screen! I’m all in on physical media it would seem.

Come on Joe, Mike doesn't have time for changing CDs, he's doing very important things! Like building his very own mastering studio for his "special friend" who's going to come and live WORK there for ever and ever a totally reasonable time whereafter he will TOTALLY get to leave on his own accord and will NOT be chained to the equipment by a series of ropes and pulleys. C'mon Joe!

Hey—we’re basement brothers. You of all people know these basements don’t “decorate” themselves!

Amen, brothers

I saw that Rhino and Coltrane's Ole were mentioned here so seems like a good time to recommend this one.

I bought it a few years back and dipped into it again this weekend, its absolutely fantastic, really great quality. Thick jackets, textured box, and stellar pressings. Not sure how available it still is, but worth picking up if in budget.

Got the Dead’s “In The Dark” VMP press in this week and sat down to compare it with the original I have. Not even close.

Aside from the detail, this thing is booming! Hell In A Bucket never sounded so good. Love hearing little Jerry licks I’ve never really noticed in songs like “When Push Comes to Shove” and “West LA.” And Mydland’s vocals on “Tons of Steel” (which always reminded me of a perfect 80s sitcom theme song) is so distinct. Lastly, I think the drums have the best overall improvement here, much more out in front than the original.

They have really knocked it out of the park with all of their Dead releases, bodes well for Anthem.
Yeah, I finally pulled the trigger on the VMP In The Dark this week, the reviews had been excellent and I figured I be kicking myself if I missed out.

I'm wrestling with this one. I've heard it's great, it goes great with the box set, but Tons of Steel is literally one of the worst songs I've ever heard. And Black Muddy River is stumbling up behind it asking someone to hold it's beer. But the rest of it I like.

My issue was more that there is still a good amount of quality OGs floating around for a comparable price.

That being said I am not a big fan of Brent’s songs (I don’t mind “Black Muddy River”) in general but it more comes from a place of them feeling very out of place next to a bunch of Garcia and Weir songs especially on a studio album (they don’t sound as out of place live) but if I had an album full of Brent sung studio cuts, I probably wouldn’t hate it.

I have a soft spot for Tons of Steel, mostly because it sounds like it could’ve opened any 80s family sitcom. Super cheesy 80s song, but that adds charm. Not a staple Dead song.

BMR is one of their finest ballads IMO, and I think most Deadheads would agree. To me it is one of the quintessential late-era Jerry tunes.

I had this on preorder. CS had told me that if you buy a VMP record and it goes on sale before it ships, they will refund the price difference in store credit. So I emailed CS over the holidays when the sale happened. They cancelled my order and told me to order again but I had already used the holiday code and it was one time use only. Now it’s gone up to $5 in price haha. Ah the joys of VMP

I shall listen to BMR again, FOR YOU. However I outright refuse on Tons of Steel. I barely got out alive after the first time.
