One of my favorite jazz albums ever. I’ve got a 73 ABC/Impulse pressing. I’ll try to dig it out tomorrow but remember it sounding solid. Might not help much though as there aren’t any copies for sale on discogs.Anyone have good/bad things to say about specific pressings of Elvin Jones/Richard Davis “Heavy Sounds?” I missed out on a seemingly pristine 1st press on eBay, and it’s apparent I need to focus on cheaper options if I want good condition.
I’d buy a Japanese press, but they’re mfd by Victor, and I’m worried about an album with punch losing that edge.
Edit: I missed the positive reviews on Discogs for 1979 JP press but just saw them.
Apropos of nothing, the cover is f-ing amazing!

right before me.You belived Mike? He’s like the last person on the whole forum that could do a no buy January!
I'm doing dry January and so far it has absolutely not affected my ability to purchase very expensive vinyl from foreign countries on a regular basis.
I'm doing dry-ish January, said I'd only drink if out to dinner. Or watching Niners football. Yesterday I had a shitty day at work - guess I need to add that to the list.
If you have beer craving, I'm absolutely hooked on the hopped soda water that I've been getting at Whole Foods. It is the closest beer substitute flavor I've found. Delicious alcohol free beverage.
Purchased!
I'm drinking alcohol and buying vinyl.
The world can burn.
What is it with that! I’ve found some nice non alcoholic beer recently but €7 for 6 little cans is the same as normal and we have one of the highest alcohol duties in the world. It’s mental. So I just get drunk instead…
We tried non alcoholic beers when my wife was pregnant last year. They have them at lots of bars and same issue here. Same price (or more!) than a pint of beer.
My dry January is officially two years old.I like that brand but like the Lagunitas one a bit better. Have you tried that one? Super hoppy and refreshing.
pictures like this make me antsy.Just A/B some Petty.
I REALLY love the Bellman box.
But Sterling Damn The Torpedoes has some crazy OG magic. Fantastic.

Better than a US OG?Side note, I know it's been mentioned on here by others but I have to echo their sentiments...

This is absolutely stunning. Sterling master and dear lord does it sound amazing. Rivals any of my AP/MOFI pressings.
LoL why?pictures like this make me antsy.
This might make me a heathen to you but, I don’t particularly care for them so I try to save money by buying really clean copies with no obi, or a damaged obi I can toss…
If the vinyl isn’t on the table it goes in the sleeve and that one appears to be naked with stuff on top of it. Makes my butt itch.LoL why?
The songs in the box set are not in chronological order. If the vinyl isn’t on the table it goes in the sleeve and that one appears to be naked with stuff on top of it. Makes my butt itch.
I haven't heard a US OG however it's the same master but on silent Japanese vinyl so I mean depending on the quality of the OG maybe yes maybe no? Sterling in the deadwax.Better than a US OG?
yep--could care less about the OBIs. if it's there, fine. but in many cases it's an extra $15-$20 for an OBI.This might make me a heathen to you but, I don’t particularly care for them so I try to save money by buying really clean copies with no obi, or a damaged obi I can toss…

i love reading discogs reviews.This.
My dad's og Sterling mastered Pinckneyville pressing of Damn the Torpedoes jolts me like a shock. I can't imagine a better version.
3 out of 5 stars, hilarious. I completely agree with the last sentence, although it says nothing about this particular version. For those interested, I would say this might be one of those legendary "hot stamps."i love reading discogs reviews.
"I am not nor have I ever been a big TP fan. I didn't even pretend I was after news of his passing. That said, I do believe if you were to own only one TP album (as I do) this would be it."
Oh, I would definetely put it on the white hot stamper page3 out of 5 stars, hilarious. I completely agree with the last sentence, although it says nothing about this particular version. For those interested, I would say this might be one of those legendary "hot stamps."
My neighbor down the street who is... a little peculiar, just bought a pair of Klipsch Cornwall's and starting telling me about the Hot Stampers he's bought from that site and I just backed into a hedge.Oh, I would definetely put it on the white hot stamper page
