Definitive Audiophile pressings

So what do you all think of this description/disclaimer? I get the assumption, but...........

Thoughts?

If it's NM & VG+, why is it sealed? I would ask him to open it and check the dead wax, he can still sell it. Very suspect listing, sounds almost like he bought 2 thinking they were KG& H, opened one and found out it wasn't.

Sorry friend, but VMP is for sure an audiophile label - AAA, RKS, QRP...that makes it an audiophile product for me, on a par with MOFI, AP or any others.
So far, fucking up at $125 hasn't cured FOMO or collectors OCD. In fact, the free market enables it and relies on it.

Not to wade into this too deep, but I would say VMP Classics is definitely Audiophile. And ~20% of their exclusives. (Recently: The Jazz Distillery albums, JLH, Chet Baker, and Sonny Sharrock all come to mind.)

For me, anything pressed at GZ is NOT audiophile, even if it's AAA. Just too many pressing issues and too little quality control. (See Erykah Badu, Billie Holiday, Johnny Cash, etc.)

Of course, "audiophile" is subjective, so to each their own.

Yeah, I'm not taking my chance on that. Sealed NM/VG+ isn't a huge red flag to me (he seems to be of the mind that Mint isn't existing which is fine) but I would never assume that ordering two of anything from Amazon at the same time brings me two of the exact same copies.

Ya, I get the sneaking suspicion he did what I did, lots of similarities, but it ended up being this pressing from Amazon.............that gamble I was willing to take for $15 ;)

@MikeH you think there’s a chance mofi represses allman brothers live at Fillmore east ? It says sold out but it’s still in their site unlike other allman releases
I think @dansomeone is correct. Once MD jacks up the price, they are likely OOP. That has been my gauge lately. The listings on the MoFi site seem kinda strange....almost like somebody got lazy and just stopped putting up items before an arbitrary release date. They do have the archive section now though.

I paid like $18 for non sealed copy that had the hype sticker on the plastic sleeve tucked away inside the jacket like 3 weeks ago. That price tag seems a bit aspirational.
I've been finding a lot of better deals lately through local shops that ship than on discogs lately. A lot of people seem to be buying up the cheaper copies of albums on discogs in the past year and a half which only leaves the copies that someone posts at a crazy price to see if someone might go for it.

I must say, this Bitches Brew 40th is awesome, MASSIVE upgrade to my basic MOV-plated version that you see in stores everywhere. The packaging and booklet are really nice, high quailty and the extra SWAG is really cool. Haven't put on the CDs or DVD yet but this is a 10/10 box set, I don't know why I haven't heard of this thing until just now with it having been around for 11 years.

This pressing and release in general is spectacular! I highly recommend this release to anyone! It’s glorious! 🏆♥️
I fell absolutely in love with Elements when I first heard it last year and poked around briefly but this pressing seemed all sold out. Was thinking about it again today and did some deep google digging. Out of stock virtually everywhere and selling for $100 on discogs, but somehow found it for original retail at a shop in Florida. Is it a mirage ? Inventory error? I sure hope not, we shall see..

This has been my go-to move lately. Discogs has gotten insanely priced and it’s hard to find a good deal or records at retail anymore. Yet I keep finding good stuff for good deals/original MSRP at random small local stores

This doesn't really belong here but not sure where else to put it. Just found this rather interesting (from 2015) article on MOV that I hadn't seen before. It probably shows why I like MOV as I don't have audiophile ears (and wouldn't want to spend $125 on anything other than perhaps an all-time top 10 record for me). Some things might have changed but it kind of summed up why I find MOV a reliable choice. (I found it while looking at the new MOV pressing of Miles In Tokyo, which seems to get better reviews than the RSD pressing).

This was a really interesting read, thanks for sharing.

I found the part about their DMM machine being a rare late generation model that doesn't have the associated 'issues' interesting. I always associate DMM's with being a lot brighter and tend to stay clear of them (when it comes to jazz anyway) but it seems like perhaps that was just an over generalisation.

There is one load of bull in the article: “There won’t be a lot of people who can tell the difference between a complete analogue master cut and a new record cut from one of our recent digital mediums because the difference is so small. You need to have golden ears and then you also need to know how to listen to it.”

Which is not true at all. You only can't tell the difference if you don't A/B or compare the two masterings. It's normally pretty obvious unless you have a really cheap set of speakers. That said, if you can't find a AAA version of an album you really want, you could do a lot worse than picking up a MOV copy. My rule of thumb is that if there is a cut by a stud mastering engineer, that it almost always trumps the MOV version, but a lot of times there are only either expensive OOP copies of albums or cheap MOV versions to choose from.

I agree, depending on system it's generally pretty obvious, I don't think you even need to A/B.

I have the MOV & MOFI Bill Withers at Carnegie hall & they are both good. When I got the MOFI, I didn't need to go back to the MOV to compare, I had a different reaction to it, I knew the album & the MOV was a step up from my CD & the MOFI a step up from my MOV.

Yeah, I basically meant that if you have heard both versions ( a digital and an all analogue) you can tell, even if you dont A/B them back to back. You only can't tell maybe if you do a blind taste test of a pressing, which in some cases you can even tell without hearing other versions if it's AAA or not.
