Definitive Audiophile pressings

I really have only heard a few of his most famous songs which I've really enjoyed. I first got really motivated to check him out after that scene where John Krasinski and Emily Blunt are dancing to Harvest Moon in A Quiet Place, I thought that was beautifully done, but I didn't really know where to start so I checked out Harvest which was meh. Point me in the right direction lads, fwiw I'm more interested in his soft folky stuff than his guitar god stuff, at least right now.
The recent pressing Greatest Hits (2lp +7") seems to be very popular, but harder to find right now. I was going to go that way but fell down the cherry pick tree.

Everybody Knows This is Nowhere and After the Goldrush are a great place to start. If you give them the time they warrant, my guess is that you’ll be well on your way to amassing a NY collection. I personally think Harvest is a great album, but I grew up with Neil Young’s music and that record represented a bit of a turn for him in that a few of the cuts received a lot of radio play and that really put him on the map. The great thing is that his catalog is HUGE so there’s a lot to explore.

As far as the folkie side I would agree with others and give After The Gold Rush a go. It’s probably his best album from that era overall. I love Harvest too but it’s not as strong of an album overall. And again to echo others, if you want a bit more of an overview of his career, both Decades and his Greatest Hits both are fantastic in that regard.

Okay so I'm still on my quest to find this dang 2016 Bowie Rise and Fall of Ziggy. The 82 Japanese press had a sound file link of a needle drop but it was noisy AF so I'm not going to risk it. Does anyone have the gold 2016 press? It's supposedly the same master but I've read some comments saying it's not great sounding. Which could be the gold vinyl which I find tends to be noisy. But it would be the easiest way to tell I'm getting the correct master... @jamieanderson1968 I think you PIF'd this version a while back and I STUPIDLY declined because I had already claimed your other Bowie's...

I bet your favorite local has a VG copy of Decades for pretty cheap. I think everyone's does. GH is About $50 if you can find it right now.

The sleeves are indentical so you can only tell by the dead wax. If you’re buying off cogs you have to have a seller that is willing to check the dead wax and confirm the version for you.

What I’ll say about the second hand recordcity records I’ve bought is that they grade conservatively and they’re all nice vinyl but they’re aren’t cleaned. I’ve had a few that have been filthy but have had flawless vinyl after a clean.

Chiming-in because it may be related to your question: I had a gold 2017 press of Hunky Dory and it was very noisy. I ended up replacing it for a standard black 2016.

Yeah I've blasted out emails to like six different cogs stores who claim to be selling the 2016 but almost all of them listed the item in 2020 so I suspect they're wrong. But we'll see.

Yeah it's listed as EX, but the needle drop was poppy as hell. So for like $60+ I'm not sure I want to take the chance.

Okay thanks, yeah this makes sense, it's kinda what I've heard about that Ziggy gold press.

For that money fair. I think I paid max €30 on the 10/11 I've bought over my two orders and most have been nearer €10-€15. That said I don’t trust needle drops for anything so 🤷🏻

I agree, I don't trust them either. But I've also had EX looking vintage albums without a mark on them that sound like a gramophone because they've been played to death. So I'm just going to avoid.

Yeah that’s fair enough. Plus at that kinda money I start to get a bit sceptical of 50 year old vinyl without the needle drop.

Actually, $60CA is a lot of money though isn’t it? 😂😂😂
