Definitive Audiophile pressings

When I read about CSNY's Deja Vu Alternates just prior to last month's RSD, I knew it was something I would want to own because I'm a long-time fan of the group and their music. So I ordered it online on RSD, but a sort of reverse-FOMO hit and the fact it was so readily available led me to lose some interest in it--fucked up, I know! Just got around to listening to the record, though, and it's worth a bit of hype.

Some impressions of note:
  • It's definitely audiophile quality. As I've come to expect from pressings that fall into this category currently, every element of the music has its own place in the mix and it's all crystal clear. Most ideal is that the vocals, so important to this music, are front and center, as if the mastering process began with isolation of the vocal tracks and built out the rest from there. The vinyl itself is flat and quiet, and the sound is top-notch.
  • Almost Cut My Hair alone is worth the price of admission, which @MikeH alluded to in a previous post. I assume it's Steven Stills and Neil Young on electric guitars, one (Young, I think) in the left channel, the other in the right, and they get down and dirty! David Crosby's voice is about as strong and toneful as I've ever heard it beyond his harmonies with the likes of Jackson Browne (most evident on For Everyman), and overall the song is killer. (Went on a bit too long, but that's easily forgiven.)
  • Woodstock is the only song on the album that isn't nearly as good as the 'original,' so it's easy to see why they would have passed over this version.
  • Our House has completely different harmonies from the original version, one voice a falsetto throughout, and it's a very cool alternate take. Really doesn't sound like CSNY, though of course it is, so this is a perfect inclusion on an 'alternates' record.
  • Know You Got to Run is fantastic, broken off from Everybody I Love You (which doesn't appear on this record) where it served as an intro of sorts on the original. Here it's its own full-length song, performed by Steven Stills, and he nails it. I really like the multi-voice version on the original album, but this alternate take stands alone very well--though definitely better suited to a Steven Stills album.
I'm pretty sure I've seen this record available in my local shops within the past week, at original retail. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if you could get a deal on it, since something like 20,000 were pressed. If you like CSNY, check it out before it's gone.

I was really surprised at how much I like this one. Makes me sad I missed out on that Fleetwood Mac Alternates release! I think like you said this might be around and even on sale at some point soon. It flew under the radar a bit, maybe because of 20,000 pressed.

100%. Took a chance on it when I saw it at my local for $22 (they still had 20+ a week ago), probably my favorite of all this year’s RSD titles. It’s incredible!

Just got my shipping notice from JPC, Speakers Corner pressing in stock if anyone is looking for it.
Such a good one. Transformer and a few other great ones were in stock when I looked the other day too.

I’ve had this in my Plaidroom cart since RSD. Maybe I need to get on it.

Two current discogs listings for the same Fleetwood Mac - Rumors 2LP pressing from Acoustic Sounds, with the one in better condition (as described) $15 less than the other. This one's been hyped quite a bit here and it does sound great.

the confusing pricing continues!

At first I thought they'd just re-listed the same record at a higher price (as we saw yesterday with the MoFi TP's), but they're two separate listings. (And by no means am I intending to give them shit for any of this because we all get to decide for ourselves what/whether to purchase, and I've been very happy with some of the purchases I've made from their discogs listings.)

yea it's more bizarre than anything to me! I just wanna know how it all works because right now seems like they spin a wheel and whatever it lands on is what they charge.

I think a lot of the "deals" get snatched up quickly. but yea--the prices on some are crazy for sure.

They had “make offer” on the Classic CSNY Deja Vu awhile back. Needless to say an expensive rec so I offered them 10% under the listing. Pride wouldn’t let me go the extra mile. They turned me down flat. It sat there a couple three weeks but must of sold.

It hurts. :-)
