Definitive Audiophile pressings

Yeah thats exactly why. My taste is why I instead have 77 Chris Bellman masters instead and I gotta say that I like work! I can see my 29 Ryan Smith going up before my 26 Kevin Gray.
I’ve been upping my Bellers and Smiffy lately too. I know I always put heart eye emojis anytime someone mentions BoomBoom but those guys rule too.

I have 72 KPG but only 21 Audiphile (ORG, AP, MoFi, PP, SC, Intervention, and Classic) and I have about 1500 albums. Must have a lot of crap on my shelves.

Zero Bread albums though.

A lot of really great music will never see an “audiophile” pressing. So not crap just more eclectic taste in tunes.

The MoFi Bread - Baby I’m-A Want You sounds pretty good. :-)

I’m a little surprised an audiophile label hasn’t tried to approach the market on non jazz or classic rock releases. Intervention does a bit to be fair, and it’s probably due to a slew of reasons that many don’t, but I have a lot of artists I’d love to really get some top flight level pressings on. Given MoFi prices on the small handful of non Boomer artists, I suspect a market is there.

Maybe we can pool together resources here??

Kidding aside, I wouldn’t want anything to do with trying to start a vinyl reissue label currently. Shane from intervention is on Hoffman a bunch and it just sounds awful with everything going on. Paying up front to have releases take 6+ months between sleeves and pressings, delays, etc. I bet we will see some in the next few years though. I love Intervention’s titles. They do some interesting and unexpected titles

My Jeff Beck was supposed to deliver today FedEx from MoFi. Didn’t show. Now it says delay and Sat delivery. Of course it is a business address so likely there will be no one there to accept delivery. Not good.

Anyone know how the Simply Vinyl version of Schmilsson sounds? Went to play it and found it to be a sealed copy. I always keep sealed copies separate from the players but somehow this one was in the players rack.
I don’t have any Simply Vinyl at all so not sure about the label to be honest!

Don't ignore Grunders. the Joni box is outstanding.

I don't have all of mine on cogs, but KG is by far the most popular, currently showing at 69. That'll go into the 100 club if I add all my TPs & BN80's.

I sort of agree with @Joe Mac but KG gets more sold because he is marketed more than the others. A lot of the time you have to wait until someone has the record before you find out its a Chris Bellman master. Boom Boom is mostly advertised up front. If you are thinking about buying a record, when you know it's KG, BG, RKS or CB it will make the decision easier. And the disappointment greater when you find out you've been shafted by location again.

I picked this up for £14 yesterday, when I got it home I realised the US version is a Smiffy mastering, the European Kr, Daniel Kreiger (The Smiffy cut is likely much better)

For KG the Blue Notes, give it a slant on Jazz, but I don't think he focuses on that, I think it's more where the master tapes are located, east coast & west coast. I also have a hunch that KG is just more of a workaholic than the others, the amount of KG issues over the past few years is just ridiculous.

The vinyl & pressing is just as important. To me a lot of KGs cuts initially come across as not so much bright, but sometimes a tiring listen. I could say this is set-up, but you don't have it at all on the TPs (for example). I think it's the cheaper vinyl or pressing plant sometimes used. (I just started using Art Du Son cleaning fluid and think this might help with this, but the jury is still out)

Bellers, Smiffy, Boom Boom & Grunders are the current big 4. We should start adding some other names to the list. We all have great mastered albums but I never remember the names of any others. (Someone mentioned J Golden, I might have a few of his but don't think I've got many).

I don't, but suspect it will be good, though not as great as the MoFi. Simply Vinyl did some good pressings in the 90's early 00's but the Mofi is outstanding

Do you keep sealed copies of records?

Father and Son is by far my favorite …holy crap I’m in the front row of a concert right now

That pressing is amazing. Definitely one of the best I own, if not the best. I'm just getting lazy with the 45s lately. (I need to play it more)

The fact that Rhino never advertises who cuts an album or where it’s pressed is a bit mind blowing to me. Most of them lately have been one of the four main guys and you’d think they would realize that it’s a selling point. There are so many surprise cuts from those guys and you don’t know until you open it. I just tend to buy a rhino reissue if it’s an album I like now since it’s more likely than not that one of those guys cut it.

And yes. The Grund Man is up there too. He just seems to do less lately than the others.

Honestly with the Warner back catalogue those rhino albums sell themselves. The people who actually care who mastered it are a tiny percentage. Honestly I can say that so long as it sounds great I couldn’t care less either.
