Definitive Audiophile pressings

My local shop just previewed the used arrivals going out tomorrow and the MoFi DSOTM is among them. Not sure if it’s the 79 or 81 release. Any thoughts on that versus the 2016?
Depending on price, I’d go 2003 over MoFi…pretty sure you can differentiate between the MoFis by whether or not OMR is italicized. Clean 2016s by all accounts sound great too. I’ve found the MoFi is wildly overpriced nearly every time I see it in good condition.

I second the 2003 if you can find one in good playing condition. I sold one a few months ago that had some surface noise and just took a shot on another for $100 today. Hopefully this one is a bit of a better pressing because the sound is fantastic.

It sounds great, listened last night.
That’s great to hear. Mine came but haven’t had the opportunity to listen to it. I am most excited to hear how “Remember (Christmas)” sounds. That’s such a gorgeous song, and admittedly as a big fan of You’ve Got Mail, always hits me emotionally 😂

I'm spinning mine now. It does sound awesome. Nilsson Schmilsson is a superior album to me (and I prefer one or two others over Son of...) but the pressing is great.
I picked up a Speaker’s Corner copy of Aerial Ballet at the same time as Son of. That’s probably the one I’d put ahead of Son but I love how unique and quirky Son is. Excited to listen to all of these when I can on Monday!

Let me know about that speakers corner pressing…im tempted ;)

I ended up passing on it. It was the 81 (italicized OMR) and in beautiful shape (jacket and vinyl). Asking price was $100, which probably isn’t bad given the condition, but too much for me to justify.

Yea Schmilsson is my favorite of his, then I think Aerial and maybe Nilsson does Newman over Son of...but I do enjoy them all.

Im kinda tempted one of the times I dip into record city to get the one of his Lennon produced just because they have tonnes of the OG cheap and apparently they just spent the whole time getting pissed…

Here's one I don't think I've seen in this thread. (I also posted these photos in the Fresh Grabs thread.) It's a Japanese Mobile Fidelity pressing of Santana's live album, Lotus (originally released in 1974). Cut from a high-res DSD master, and everything I've read has been very positive about its SQ. I'll report back, but also would be interested to hear from anyone who might have this. For now, the jacket/art work alone are pretty entertaining.

The tri-fold jacket is shown as the three panels at the center of the photo. At each end is a folded-out insert, and photo inserts are displayed above and below the jacket, along with what I think is a reproduction of the original Japanese Lotus promotional flyer (center top)

Everything I looked up was high, like double here
So I've been looking through Record City's offerings and it seems to me that for Japanese original pressings in what is effectively NM- condition (RC's 'EX'), their prices are substantially better than what we would pay locally for the same vintage of US pressings of the same records in the same condition. And this appears to be as true for the super-popular stuff (Pink Floyd, Beatles, etc.) as for anything else. I think their US stuff is priced higher, which is understandable since they're imports to Japan, and for me at least it wouldn't make sense to buy US pressings from them (unless they were unavailable elsewhere). Anyway, this is one of those like jpc.de where a part of me wants to just keep it a secret, but I'm kind of glad (and fiscally disappointed ;)) this particular secret was shared here. Just placed another order, and I'm focusing mostly on EX OG pressings from the 70's, with OBI if possible.

I think I have mentioned it before, I do have it. Not just cut from a high res DSD master, but from a whopping DSD256 transfer done by the original Sony engineer.

IT IS AWESOME!!

Yeah once I discovered them the part of my that wanted to share and broadcast from the rooftops won out. Part of me wanted to keep it as my little secret 😂

Same here, getting these Japanese OGs for far less than I’d pay for a European OG over here.

Are classic rock Japanese pressings typically well lauded? Looking to stock up on Beatles/Stones but all older pressings I’ve picked up here in the states have been pricey and horrible sounding

It’s hard to talk in generalisations because like here or there it can vary across an albums pressings. Research still pays off. The better ones do tend to be rated higher and the real thing I’ve found so far is that the condition that these things have been kept in for over half a century is wonderful and tends to beat anything I can find here.

In addition to being well-cared for, another theory is that Japanese record plants had higher standards/used higher quality vinyl, so the pressings were more likely to be clean/quiet from the start. As for whether they sound better, however, do the research on the higher priced LPs. But if it's $5-10, like a lot of their Ex- OGs, go for it.
