Remember, they were made for speakers, not headphones. At that time, there was nobody walking around with earbuds and headphone use was pretty low.

I think that's pretty inevitable yes.
But I bet it does sound very very good, if you like that kind of thing. Their music would definitely lend itself to sounding fantastic on a nice AAA 45 pressing.
