Definitive Audiophile pressings

The deluxe box set of Way Out West has been going in and out of stock at Target if anybody has been looking for it…

This is part of why I have been buying direct from MoFi lately. Pretty sure if you buy from MD, they fulfill in order of orders received and for records that aren’t limited, you can get pushed to the next batch if they don’t have enough copies. it seems MoFi has taken more and more copies of the repressed when they come in. Not sure when you ordered Tapestry or Withers…but lately I’ve received albums directly from MoFi often before my backorder is even marked as shippable at MD…
I bought from Mofi direct. Called again today and said I didn’t understand how my order hasn’t shipped but peoples BOB are. They said my order was buried. 3 hours later it shipped.

Well I’m glad they shipped it! Places have been a mess lately between staff shortages and the holidays.

Okay so, Cohen Songs Of Love and Hate RSD vinyl. It's dead quiet, mastered well but very much in the rather "polite" RKS style. It's warm, everything is very rounded, unlike KPG or BG where you're going to get sharp edges on vocals and cymbals and guitar plucks that give everything a bit more immediacy. But to be honest every time I've heard this album that's just kinda what it sounds like, warm and rounded rather than in the room live performances. This is excluding "Sing Another Song, Boys" which does sound more live because, well, it is live at the Isle of Wight. My copy has an off centre label on side B that JUST clears the runout and there is also a small amount of no fill on the final two tracks of Side B. It's very minor but it's there, so YMMV but so far I'm the only one on Cogs to mention it so I probably have the only copy on planet Earth with that issue.

In terms of comparables I put it up against the high res MQA version on Tidal and it's REAL close but the vinyl does win. But by very very little and to be honest I think my cart/stage are doing a lot of the legwork there so if you have a high res streamer I'm not certain it's worth getting the vinyl. The difference is very subtle, more stage and dynamics to the vinyl but VERY little difference. I no longer have my Sundazed but from what I recall this does sound better, but not by much. If you've got a clean copy of that probably not worth getting this.
Only other thing is the jacket, it's really nicely embossed which I've never seen before on this album and it shows up really well.

There ya go, more than you ever needed to know about a $20 repress of a 50 year old record.

Yeah I listened side by side with my original and it’s damn close. Very true to the original. They did a good job with the reissue.

Serge Gainsbourg pressings? Any thoughts on the reissues?

I have the LITA Melody Nelson from 2009 pressed at United and it's surprisingly quite good other than a tiny bit of background. Tip-on packaging is top-notch too. Spinning it again now for the monthly challenge and it still holds up. But I'm always open to improvements in sound and AAA reissues.

I'd also be interested in Vue De L'Extérieur, L'Homme a Tete de Choux, Jane Birkin & Serge Gainsbourg and Aux Armes Etc.

There's a box set coming too, IIRC. Any thoughts on it?

Or are originals the way to go?

I remember seeing the 2 box sets on Amazon.ca for cheapish but neither are listed anymore. I am not sure of the pressing/AAA status but I remember the first one got good reviews for quality.

I just found the recent ones and they're Abbey Road half-speeds. Could be excellent, or not, I guess. Mono volume is already out and the stereo 70's volume is coming out in a few weeks. But the price is well, ouch. I'd probably buy the Bowie brick first.

I have this which sounds excellent. I believe it's AAA (says new mastering from original tapes on the hype sticker), but could have digital in the chain. But very much recommended, even if just for the second lp of different takes. it has just been repressed so it is widely available now, I assume it's from the same plates.

I also have this but it's been at my brothers forbears and haven't really listened to it in a long time. I remember it sounding great & requiem pour en con is a classic track. amazing.

I recently picked up the 1st (Abbey Road) box set and haven't listened to it all, first impression is that there are some great sounding albums, well pressed but might be the odd one that doesn't sound so good.

auto correct is a wonderful thing. I meant to say 'for ages' but the whisky got in the way :)

Yeah my guess was that you meant years and that happened but the image of a music loving Steve Irwin type character in the north east playing tunes to bears was just too good to turn down!
