Definitive Audiophile pressings

So I'll offer a gently contrasting opinion. Check out the cut of Moanin' on streaming. There is a joy of seeing a top band work through some things live in a set -- side note, I think that Shorter takes a 5+ minutes to find his voice and pace at the open of the set, it (my opinion) isn't his best. But Lee Morgan is pushing the bad hard on Moanin' -- pace, tight tight register and runs. I love and own great copies of the originals -- and sets like this allow me to hear those originals differently and with fresh ears.

For example, this is a great set --;with okay sound quality given the venue, etc -- but with crackling energy and semi grey maker pressings...and it cooks

So I would 100% support it not being the first record you buy, but hearing the artists explore, create, and work through ideas adds a special aspect to jazz

Caveat: one of my favorite records in Coltrane at the half note.... Which is definitely not for everyone...so take my note with all the value of the random comment on the internet. :)

Pretty random Target find arrived today. Probably shouldn’t have ordered it since a BG AAA cut is in the works from AP apparently but couldn’t help myself…

Im lucky enough to have both of these and they are fantastic.

The Art Blakey is quite affordable and, as @HuddieLedbetter stated, it's a fantastic set to hear the group bouncing off each other in a live environment. There's the occasional whoop from the crowd as well which helps transport you to the gig.

The Sonny Rollins is another killer set. Despite it being from a digital source (this was questioned when it was released....which is always a good sign) it really is a stellar pressing. Im fortunate enough to have a first UK Mono pressing to compare it to and it hold up really well. I personally like the outtake LP, there is enough there that it feels substantial rather than a few rehashed or poor versions.

Yea very happy with the Rollins quality! Ended up being $50 after my various rewards and free shipping which isn’t too shabby! Haven’t had a chance to listen to the outtakes one yet

We were discussing these two versions earlier. It seems 45rpm Audiophile fells the reg Mo-Fi version is the way to go. :). I like the way the One-Step sounds. Quiet vinyl. But the reg Mo-Fi always sounded good. And I really like the album in general. Janis could really dig deep.

So, Now I’m am going to have to really listen to these carefully back to back. 🤔

It’s going to be a rough day if Bitches Brew, Sketches of Spain, and Somethin Else go through on the same day  hoping all three come out within the next year!

I know what you mean. If everything comes out in rapid succession it will be a cash crunch. OTOH if they continue at two or three a year I’m going to need to double down on my cardio workouts. Else, my wife may be receiving Mo-Fi back orders long after I’m gone. Glad she likes both Miles & Van Halen.

My local had a copy of the Tapestry MOFI and I hesitated buying it to pick-up later. Lasted less than a day. Damn.

I asked over in another thread, but where is a good source for SCAD's from Japan? Thanks.

I've had good luck with them. Good selection, fair shipping cost, and I get stuff pretty quickly too.

The next one step after Carole King (which apparently is shipping in the next 4-6 weeks?) is going to be Folk Singer by Muddy Waters. It’s currently being pressed according to Toad Hall
I was hoping it would be one that I planned on getting, having passed on the last few for already having quality pressings. But my wallet will be happy.

The AP sounds superb, really don’t know how much better it could be.

I have the opportunity to buy the Ziggy Stardust MoFi, graded NM/VG+, for $150.

Thoughts on the price/quality from those who have it? It seems like a great price for it (Discogs avg/avg sold prices are around $200) though I’ve heard both great and meh things about it. But almost figure that at that price, if I’m not super satisfied, I can at least sell it for what I paid.
