Definitive Audiophile pressings

Also, I live right down the street from Music Direct, so if anyone needs me to send a strongly worded message to them in person about their Mofi shenanigans, let me know 🪧

Well, on the unlikely outside chance MD starts dumping excess MoFi inventory in the rear trash bin I would be very appreciative if you would grab me one copy of each title. Ideally without bent corners or split seams. :-).

If there is anything coming from this MOFI tempest in a teapot, it is that Fremer (aside from being a real asshole) is full of shit. And newbie Mike45 has come across like a baby fanboy.

To be fair, I don't think Fremer ever said a copy tape was cut from the master, he said that's what MofI told him & immediately said he didn't know what the reality was, until the In Groove interview, following that he said he was lied to. The one thing we have learned is that MoFi tell more lies than Pinnochio.

I don't know what people are expecting from them. They never said all analog. They said Original Master Recordings, and stated the source was master tapes. That is still very much true. Sure, they are perhaps guilty by omission here, but they never said all analog - just that the master tapes are their source, which is true.

They have said all analog with no digital in the chain There is a video doing the rounds (someone on here posted earlier in the thead), and the CS has said no digital in the chain. From my point of view they have straight out lied.

Even if they hadn't said it directly, they have completely misled everyone by not talking about the introduction of a digital step to an "Analogue" chain, which to me amounts to the same thing.

I'll still buy the records if they sound good (and the exchange rate goes down), I won't lose sleep over the flippers tears, I have no expectations from MoFi, but they should be called out for the deception. What would be great, is if they, and others, become more transparent and talk more about how they produce the records that they do.

I agree with @Andy all else aside, we need everyone to be transparent about source, etc. Especially the "audiophile" labels.

Someone above posted an example of VMP's chain on a release. That was something the old forum, pours one out, asked for and got before the head honchos went all we don't care about you demanding assholes - "what would you do with more time?"

they have said they will add sources and lots already are updated on their site. Seems like they have been doing the 45s first.

Superfly is analogue cut straight to lathe but not confirmed to be the original master. Jeff Beck is DSD256. Both Nilssons are DSD256. T Rex is DSD256. Johnny Cash, Love and Theft, Desire supervinyl, Blues for Allah, Mars Hotel…all DSD256 from the master tapes. And they all sound excellent..

The previous Desire is also down as DSD 256 as well which makes sense because given pressing numbers, and the fact it wasn’t a one step, they probably used the same metalwork. If they are DSD as far back as that my money is on all the Dylan 45s, mono and stereo, being from DSD 256 transfers and that they just haven’t got as far back as updating those yet.

Yea wouldn’t be surprised if the Dylan’s are all DSD. I think the recent Miles Davis albums all may be as well. Miles Smiles is DSD but that’s the only one I’ve seen so far since they are still going down the list and updating

At this point, it may be easier if they just reported what was actually cut from tape. Those may be the minority.

They said in the interview all Miles was cut from digital.
I'm just ready for it to all be over. The whole thing is stupid. They should have said they started using DSD when they first switched over from cutting from analogue. The records still sound fantastic. Don't think we need any more 45 minute videos or think pieces on the matter.

The whole "controversy" is reminding me why I really disliked the vinyl community at large when I first started buying records. This forum excluded obviously, but on other forums/FB communities/etc, the responses are insane to me. A lot of responses make me think that people aren't even buying records for the music.

At the end of the day, I just care if the pressing is good and sounds good on my system. And MoFi delivers that for me by and large. I'll still buy them if I like the titles.

UK A1/B3 by a wide margin.

I like the US Barry cut as a second choice. So much that I dumped my half speed master for it.
Interesting. I have this Barry cut:

and I prefer the 43454 half speed. Haven't heard the UK.

I had a hybrid half speed with 43454 labels and runout on one side and 33454 on the other. It sounded very shrill and like the treble was cranked to make it loud. I have this Barry:

It was much warmer and less treble cranked sounding. For me, it was more pleasing.

The UK A1/B3 still wins.

I got back into vinyl because I liked the vintage record hunting. See how good of an album I could find for around $5 or less.
I would rather brag about how this inexpensive grab sounds really good instead of trying to justify to myself and others how good a $100+ record sounds.

The older stuff is even more rare and special to me each day.

Yea--I love a good cheap find and digging through record stores. But I also largely go for the quality over quantity approach now. Doesn't mean I'm going for the most expensive version of every album, but I'd rather buy a really great sounding copy of an album for $40 than get 2 $20 albums that sound alright. I've really cut back on vinyl purchasing in general now though. I'm down to maybe 4-5 albums a month now.

You’re cutting back? Damnit Mike! You are supposed to be one of the ones that makes me feel good about my own addiction 😂

But I largely agree. And let’s be honest there is a place for both MoFi and digging. You’re an utter loon if you buy every MoFi, and particularly every one step, but if you buy the odd one for an album you really like or a one step for an all time favourite it can feel really special to have such a great sounding copy.

Equally some of the Japanese or UK OG finds I’ve got down the years of albums that the audiophile labels have overlooked, or where I just don’t want to spend that money, are also pretty special to me.

hahaha sorry!

I've got a little boomboom on the way, so trying to spend less money! Plus I'm just completely running out of space. I've also really been liking the Denafrips Ares DAC so been streaming more lately.

Wow! Congratulations mate! That is both exciting and a very good reason to cut back!

Tell me about the space, down to one kallax cube remaining…

I really should look into digital again. My old pi burnt out and my old SACD player started acting up within a week of each other a few months back and I just haven’t even thought about replacing them since…

Been trying the last couple of months to keep to a 1 in 1 out rule. Sold 6 and so far only added 5 for July. Definitely been relying more on my digital collection lately so that is helping to keep the balance.
