Definitive Audiophile pressings

They really should just do away with the "Mastered From The Original Analog Master Tapes" verbiage all together. Based on their logic anything not originally recorded to digital would be mastered from analog tapes. lol

They are already two copies away by the time they cut the lacquer on this one. Not really what I would define as mastering from original tapes. I will say I am soooo ready for this topic to die.

Two? One surely? They’re cutting the lacquer direct form the DSD256 transfer?

I am probably stale on my info, but I thought Fremer said they made a tape copy. I was assuming that 1/2" 30 IPS tape was not the original tape. The wording isn't clear on that. Analog master doesn't necessarily mean its the original tape.

In the video themselves they were saying if it had OMR it was a DSD from the original master tape. If it had MFSL it was because all, or part, of it could not be verified as the master and might be a copy from a tape that was generation later. They were saying that they bring their proprietary tape gear on the road to digitise the master.

That’s why the Dylan mono of Bringing It All Back Home was an MFSL banner. Most of it was the original master but they couldn’t find it for one or two tracks and had to use safety copies for those.

Whether or not you choose to believe them is a different matter.

who sells them as DSDs? or hi-res digital? qobuz?
Outside of the classical genre, SACD is a dying format (and evren then, classical SACD is always hybrid as most buyers only access the redbook layer). AP has prety much abandoned it, MOFI has not but the sales numbers are low and feed a primarily aging audiophile who invested in the format 20 years ago.

As a download format, it is very niche outside Japan. MOFi have no license for download files so that is not possible.

The Japanese market does DSD downloads, still mostly classical, but a wider range than what we find in the west. The Santana Lotus DSD256 files can be purchased in Japan, for example. But they are very locked down by geotracking to purchasers from Japan only.

If there is anything coming from this MOFI tempest in a teapot, it is that Fremer (aside from being a real asshole) is full of shit. And newbie Mike45 has come across like a baby fanboy.

You're probably right.

If I shell out $135 for a record, I want the mastering from the tape.
If it's a $20 special, I am less apt to care.

But now, they are showing us we can get BG and KG all analog all day every day for $20-$30 on some really quality vinyl.

It's evident Mofi has been taking people to the cleaners.

Reminds me of the new bimmer heated seats subscription. Some people are going to hand over money just for the badge.

I’m a little surprised that Rastaman Vibration will be a one step. Exodus would have been my pick for any of his albums to get the one step treatment. It doesn’t have really and “classics” from Bob Marley and is one of his more inconsistent albums of the 70’s imo. Seems more like a VMP pick than MoFi  Wouldn’t surprise me if all his Island records get the one step treatment though. They’re fantastic recordings.

Grabbed this cheap on Amazon from a Reddit suggestion saying it was the BG cut. They were right! This sounds amazing!

I've wanted to grab the In Utero BG cut for some time, but prices are really high on that one. This Nevermind Back To Black was a good deal!

That's a great sounding album.

I played the hell out of the cassette when it came out. It's fun to see it make it on people's radar again.

I don't think UHQR are one steps.
Craft and Mofi were the only ones selling this unless I'm mistaken.

And still no changes in any other preorder title descriptions from what I can tell with a random quick look. And, no word from big corporate honchos or an official social media response. As someone who doesn’t collect music said to me after I showed it to them for an outside opinion “This is just embarrassing.”
I do think they have misjudged the response. These typically turn into great Harvard business case studies.

If you can find any Marley releases on the Tuff Gong label, out of Jamaica go for them. You like bass? So do Jamaicans and they got impressive amounts in the grooves of their records.

i'm ready for this topic to die too
Yes please

Don't hold your breath, I'm guessing you won't here an "official" statement from MoFi.
