Equipment Recommendations - The Home For New System and Upgrade Advice

For anyone still on the fence for this, they just met their first stretch goal. It will come with a 7 inch adapter.
Still 16 days to go so we have time to add the 10 inch adapter

wow. i checked 2 days ago and thought that theres no chance theyd hit it

so im guessing one of the free baerwald and loefgren protractors from vinyl engine will be perfectly fine on the uturn, just so i know if i can save 5 bucks compared to the one they have on sale on their site

Unless someone knows better, I think the free protractors should be fine.

You have the new tonearm for your uturn, right? Baerwald is most popular, but either one should work. My protractor is Baerwald, and it works fine.

If I'm wrong, and you have the old unipivot arm, then you would have to use the stevenson curve.

I thought about getting this, but Grado does not recommend for there cartridges. Rather they just recoemmend use a stylus brush.
Wait really?

Can you give me proof because I was about to buy one and have a grado rn

I know soundsmith doesn't want you using it but I dunno about grado

Welp, Ortofon doesn’t recommend it either:

• The use of solvents on the stylus and cantilever may damage stylus cement. Also, interior parts of the cartridge can be affected seriously by the intrusion of solvents.
NB: Ortofon do not recommend the use of the Onzow Zerodust stylus cleaner.
Review quote from Analog Planet, Jul 25, 2012, by Michael Fremer: "...The Onzow Zerodust is recommended only if you can prevent your platter from moving when you lower the stylus into the mound of gel, and only occasionally, unless you exercise extreme caution each and every time..."

Periodical use should be fine though. The brush can only remove some of the crud, no matter how much I brush.

Is there an article that addresses this?

Grado recommends a record cleaning machine as the best method to prevent junk from building up on there cartridges.

Yeah you definitely should not use anything involving liquid or gel with an ort. Supposedly the adhesive they use is very sensitive to any form of solvent, even a mild one, and you don’t want your diamond dropping off! If the manufacturer doesn’t recommend that I’d stick to the blu-tack/magic eraser periodically and stylus cleaner regularly.

Agree, but funnily the Fremer quote is not from me but from the Ortofon FAQ. So they don't recommend it but kinda say it's OK with proper use and only when necessary. I plan to remove the plater, find a support at roughly the height and put the Onzow on it. AFAIK the Onzow doesn't contain solvents.

The Onzow is just a tacky surface, not a solvent, so I’m unclear on why it has this reputation. The only way I can see it damaging a cartridge is if the platter spins underneath the cart, and, like...don’t do that?

That said, I only use mine occasionally, when the stylus has visible guff on it. If I were an every-record kinda guy I would consider something a little more delicate.

Agreed, I use it only once in a while and I hold it so it doesn't move.
