Equipment Recommendations - The Home For New System and Upgrade Advice

So they just dropped off the speakers, they actually had a small truck and a lift gate. I'm stunned. Had to get my wife to help me get them into the house, all goes well, she knew they were coming. As we place the second box in the livingroom I turn to walk back to the front door and my wife (who knows nothing about tech stuff or gear) turns to me and says:
"Hey, your amp CAN drive these speakers.... RIGHT?"

GUESS THAT NEW AMP PURCHASE WILL HAVE TO WAIT

Well they're about the 4th different color of wood in the room and I need to do some centre console adjusting but they're in and I've definitely gone from sounding like I'm listening in a small bar to sounding like I'm listening in a stadium. Room calibration is gunna have to wait to really dial them in but they sound great straight out of the box.

Looks fantastic! Can’t wait to hear what you make of them after a while! Are they front ported?

I am equal parts glad that everything appears to have gone so smoothly with the delivery and disappointed that everything appears to have gone so smoothly with the delivery. You really got my hopes up with these visions of an 18 wheeler dropping some speakers in the street in front of your place.

For real though they look beautiful. Enjoy!!

I bet either your core is strong af or you have arthritic knees.
Either way, looks sharp! Hope they give you years of wonderful listening pleasure.

They are front ported which is nice since as you can see, I'm not working with a whole lot of space here. I have them pulled out about as far as I dare. But the DIRAC room calibration will totally take care of any issues on that front. First impression without any calibration is the sound is absolutely massive, like my soundstage has gone from extending to my right wall to now ending somewhere in my front yard just next to the road. And obviously everything is warmer, but part of that is down to me not having calibrated yet. The low end is all encompassing now as well. Because my amp can only push 110 watts to 2 channel I've got these currently crossed over at 80 Hz and I'm letting my sub take care of everything beneath there. Instead of trying to fully power two 12 inch woofers. But I'm going to play with that. See how it sounds with no sub, lower crossover etc. The only lousy thing with my fancy pants AVR is it has a global crossover which quite frankly is effing bollocks. So while I'd like to crossover around 60 Hz or under, I'd be overdriving my in ceiling Revel 383s and my Revel C25 centre by about 10-20 Hz. Not fatal but not awesome either...

Ah yeah I assumed they must be because you know enough about your gear to know rear ported in the space would be boomy as hell lol!

Only 110 watts lol! You’ve plenty. I’m running a similar efficiency speaker on 24 watts triode mode right now and it’s perfectly happy. That said the amp does have transformers that nearly put my back out moving it so I suppose the bandwidth is decent regardless.

I’m sure you’ll have loads of fun playing with the DIRAC and dialling them in just so but it probably isn’t a bad call to just listen to them a little first to get to know them.

That’s awesome man, congrats! And kudos to your wife for rallying as the situation calls for.

Yes I have to admit, as happy as I am that they actually delivered them in one piece, I was actually slightly disappointed that I wasn't able to give you all a better story. I do l love a ripping yarn, as most of you have probably noticed by now...

Now tell me how you resolve the wood on wood on wood on wood thing because I’m fighting the same battle.
Yeahhhhhh, honestly in this case I don't think there's any solving it. I knew the Special Edition Teak l100s would have matched perfectly but they were just out of my price range, I think this is just a live with it situation. MOST of the time the light in the room is much dimmer so it's actually not that noticeable. But yeah, it's not my favorite thing. My outlook is that the setup is always changing, but these are ultimately the speakers I wanted. So if other things change to accommodate them, like the console etc, I'm cool with that.

However the photo also doesn't really do it any favors, the colors aren't quite as different as it appears in the picture.

Or do you mean "how did you convince your wife to accept 17 different types of wood in one room."

Ive actually really started to apprieciate contrasting wood types and tones. I was finding that my space was getting a bit oppressive with all oak. Changing the coffee table for a lighter ash one and contrasting with darker walnut speakers is making me feel it’s time to get a bit more brave with that from now on.

Ultimately I agree with you, I think you can definitely get away with different wood tones as long as you sort of balance it across the house. In my case I have a lot of different tones across a lot of different rooms so I think it works out. Even if my first instinct is to match everything. What makes it tough at least on initial glance in my house is the very gold toned 1960s wood floor. Its impossible to match so you just have to kinda be confident and do what you want.

Yeah you do sort of need a dominant tone. So I have oak floors and so big pieces like tv/hifi stands or tables really need to be oak or white. But with things like coffee tables and speakers I think you can play with other tones and I’d like to begin to use accessories more to add some pops of colour.

Also walnut and oak isn’t that adventurous of me either really, that’s a kinda tried combination, I’ve often seen 50s/60s parquet oak floors with walnut detailing!

Oh man, I mean there's a million different ways to do it. But like that same livingroom where my system is has this wood:

And this wood:

And this wood:

And then the kitchen right around the corner has this wood:

And this wood:

I mean they're all totally different but... fuck it? I guess?
