Curious if anyone has a set up across two rooms or upstairs/downstairs.

I know amps back in the day had the option to run a speaker set A or a speaker set B (or A+B). Does anyone have centralized record player but have multiple sets of speakers or is it just more convenient to have a second turntable/amp and a decoupled system.
I don't, but a friend of mine does. Turntable with collection and bookshelves in one room, floorstanders on the other side of the floor with a kitchen and dining room inbetween. Not sure how he's rigged it but it's a pretty cool set-up and seems to work really well.

Yeah I'd like to do that. Basically have floor standing speakers in the living room and the bookshelves in my office. Wondering if people actually plan conduit and cable channels like this into their house planning or if it's just more efficient to buy a second set of gear.

It’s always an easier job to do if you’re doing up the rooms. One trick we did when a family member who was laying surrounds, because they had a suspended wooden floor, was to lift a few floorboards and run the speaker cable through the cavity. With concrete floors it’s a bit more difficult, although stud walls can be opened to run stuff through too. Conduit works but man is that stuff ugly lol!

On a practical point the amp needs two outputs with a switch for A, B or A+B.

Yea in the process of planning a house. Wondering if this is something worth asking to put in. Like a convenience port for the speakers. I wouldn't really know where to start. My wife already said that she thinks the turntable and the records would look great in the living room but I know she's not going to let me listen to everything there. I don't want to sit around with headphones either. So figure id have my office as a listening room in that case.

Totally! If you want to do this it’s something to get in there in the planning. The likes of Blue Jeans sell their speaker cables in longer lengths for that reason and you can also buy socket plates with binding posts on them for a super tidy finish. If I was building a house and wanted to use the same system for two sets of speakers in different rooms I’d totally be picking up bits like that and specifying it to my electrician in the first fix!

I do think I’d have my turntable in the room I listen it to most often though because moving between rooms to flip would be fine in the occasional spins room but might be more than a bit annoying in the regular spins one! That doesn’t really matter in the planning though because most speaker cable isn’t directional so you could use it either way around!

I ran conduit through the ceiling in my theatre room downstairs so that I can get fibre optic HDMI to my projector. The data transfer rates get bigger and bigger as the quality of video goes up and after having to run a new HDMI through the roof cavity upstairs only five years after moving in due to 4K I was not in the mood for the same challenge downstairs when the time comes for 8K... So it should be a nice and easy run with the conduit. When the time comes. But the other 7 speakers down there have their speaker runs buried, no conduit. That speaker wire ain't never changing.

I'll be the contrarian here and say that while it would be great to have that multi-room capability, it sounds like a pain in the ass to me to listen to records from a room that doesn't house the turntable. Hell, there are plenty of complaints about having to get up to change a 45RPM record more often than a 33, and that's without having to go to another room to do it! Since you already are planning for two sets of speakers, I'm in favor of a complete system in your listening area. I wouldn't think both systems would have to be of equal quality, so whatever criteria you would use for selecting speakers for each room (in terms of desirable qualities given likely use), apply the same to an amp and turntable.

EDIT: If you go the one-turtable route, I'd recommend an automatic table!

I bet BIS would be glad to make some custom in-wall speaker cable for their favorite customer.

This is a vinyl bar in Japan and I WANT TO LIVE IN IT

There are TONS of vinyl bars in Japan. There’s one called Chez Quasimodo in Kyoto that is amazing. Huge whiskey selection and jazz record collection. The guy’s turntable had two tone arms (one with mono cart and one with stereo). It was pretty awesome. I wanna go back to Japan so badly

Yeah my gut tells me this is a customization that might not be worth the effort and doesn't leave you with much flexibility after.

Probably a second system makes most sense.

I thought about this too when we moved into a house. We wanted a room downstairs to hang out when friends/family come over or just to sit in to listen to music and read books without having a TV in it. My wife was happy to have a record player in there. She likes music but doesn’t love everything I listen to, so I do have a secondary listening setup in my office.

I contemplated trying to do one setup with multi room speakers but it’s kind of a pain in the ass…I’m with @Russ I on that one. When I listen to records, I prefer to just be sitting in one place and not moving around the house, or needing to go into another room to flip a record.

I have a NUC/Sonos/Roon setup for multi room audio. That’s nice for when we are doing chores around the house or have groups of people over and I don’t want to fuss with a record player. I think the ikea Symfonisk Sonos are awesome for the price so that may be a route to take if you really want multiroom. With roon, I can have Qobuz play through my main setup and all my Sonos at the same time.
