Equipment Recommendations - The Home For New System and Upgrade Advice

I love the idea of getting a VPI and it's probably the direction I'd go when I upgrade but I just do not really dig the look of them. I need them to keep manufacturing the classic, the futuristic design of the Prime is very cool but it just clashes with everything in my house. It would stick out like a sore thumb.
Linn LP12 has Nighmathers name written on it

Old School VPI HW19's were beautiful as well

Yes and no. I’d rather one personally but it seems to be a feature of expensive high end tables that deviate from the rectangular, so can’t have a hinged one, to not include it. It seems odd to me to scrimp on a €100 piece for a table of that price but it also seems to be the done thing 🤷🏻

Honestly though coming into the €6,000 category I’d be looking at SME tables tbh.

Oh wait, I forgot, Monopoly money, that’s €4k. Id probably still be looking at the funk firm one then.
I was about to say, €6,000 is quite different from $6000 CAD, lol.

As far as the dust covers... I think a big part of why several higher end companies don't mess with them is because part of the price tag is maintaining very robust service and warranties. But producing plastic bits the size to cover their tables is a whole additional production process, a notable shipping expense for these small companies, and a piece that is going to need more frequent replacement and warranty. All for something that doesn't really impact their main goal - producing an excellent sounding and functioning table. I absolutely understand why they wouldn't want to add that element to their business on a cost/reward benefit scale. Plus for those manufactured in specific companies, it either involves big expenses or working in overseas shipping, ports, etc.

Now on the other hand, it's common for those types of oddly shaped tables to actually use some type of thin silk-ish sheet over the table as a dust cover. Or a kind of fabric box/cover. To me, that does seem like something that would be easily included, and I'm surprised they don't offer those. Extreme low cost, easily fits into existing packaging, costs almost nothing to replace should one have a defect. I do with they included one of those at the very least.

Fluted plinths are back as an option on LP12’s now, and Simon Price does some lovely aftermarket plinths (Simplinth) in special woods if you need something a bit different. One day I’ll make the move away from my standard cherry plinth.

There’s a company near where I grew up that so pretty awesome things with them too with aftermarket plinths, suspension upgrades, upgraded motors/power supplies and fitting higher end arms to them. Their work has always interested me! As has the amount of high end enthusiasts that there could possibly be in that area to sustain them 😂

The photoshopped signs on the front of the house / shop look err…professional?! 🤦🏼‍♂️

By all reports they’re a pretty quality operation. The guy who I bought my sub platter upgrade and isolation gear from uses their motors and power supply in his insane table. That’s where I first heard about them.

I’m guessing that’s it’s one of those wonderful British one or two man shed/small industrial unit jobs that make crazy stuff on a small scale and have no interest in things like advertising or professional websites lol!

I’m very late to this party, but above the Ultradeck, I’d be going VPI 100% with the current market offerings. Now if Mofi created a table above the UD, I’d give it a very close look. There are other interesting tables at that price point. Linn and 1200G would be others that catch my eye. But VPIs have impressed me every time I’ve heard/seen them, and I’m just very sold on the company’s whole philosophy and how they do business.
If MoFi came out with an upscale model above the UltraDeck, I’d be interested.

VPI? I like my 16.5- at what I paid for it. That said, a wood shop guy with ingenuity could make one. Today? It’s $900. No recommendation at that price. That actually clouds my opinion of their turntables. I’ve always thought their entry model is a great move from a UTurn though, and that UTurn should introduce something a bit nicer.
