Equipment Recommendations - The Home For New System and Upgrade Advice

He countered with a reasonable offer and I would be getting a Technics 1200G with a Hana ML with *supposedly* less than 50 hours on it for less than the price of a new 1200 with no cart.

My Hana SL is probs around the 800 - 1000 hour mark and would need a replacement in the next year.

This is feeling more and more like the opportunity for me.
If you were going to do it, seems like a good opportunity. Go for it!

Would be very interesting to know your feedback vs the ultradeck. I've not heard one yet.

In all the research I did ahead of me getting my 1200G, Hana carts came up a number of times as being great pairings with that table.

IMO it sounds more spacious, with better bass and dynamics than the Ultradeck I upgraded from.

Sounds like you got a good deal on top of all that, so I think you'll feel like you made the right decision once you hear it.

Ya, I know it would be tough to hold off on using the ML right away, but would be cool (for us..lol) if @Ghost could mount his SL first to see the difference and report back…
My Hana is getting a bit fuzzy towards the inner grooves these days so I’m afraid it wouldn’t be a fair shoot out. I’ll probably get it retipped for a rainy day if all goes well with the ML and 1200G. But on that rainy day you’ll find out finally!

Crossing my fingers it works out and it’s not a scam and I can pick it up soon. I’ve heard the G in friends set ups and showroom set ups on multiple occasions and have always been impressed!

Completely agree with @displayname about the suspensions these 'tables utilize. What you've heard is true, they require attention from time to time. Klutzy to the point that only "experts" should tune them (Linn) to the arm according to some. They can be great with a good tune but tend to drift over time requiring more tuning.
By the way, the "new" VPI One is a rehashing of the VPI HW19 mk ii I started out with in 1987. An okay 'table in its time.
Moot now, but just to touch on this, I had a suspended AR table (my brother in law has it now) for a couple years. It did require more time on the initial set up, but after that it was really no more work than any table. Check the springs about once a year, and then the regular stuff (belt, bearing).

I had more issues with my VPI. The unipivot was frustrating (I freakin’ hated it to be frank), especially adjusting the counter weight/azimuth. The gimballed arm would fix that. My other issue was with the motor pod. Over time the belt tension would draw it in towards the table, causing the belts to lose tension, which caused speed control issues. That was likely due to the fact that it was on a very slick and smooth surface, but between the unipivot and the belt I felt I was “adjusting and/or fixing” the damn thing way too much.

My wife was originally going to get me my first really nice watch for my 30th birthday in a few months but she came up to me yesterday and said:

I can either get you a watch or help you get a new turntable 😳. I’ve been putting away for my endgame deck for a while but now that it’s real I’m questioning if a Technics 1200G is where I want to go. I just don’t find it very beautiful hahaha. What decks should I consider (that aren’t VPI) in the 3.5-4.5K range that are beautiful and will sound as good as the 1200G?

The only one standing out currently is the Dr Feickert Volare. Looks beautiful but curious if it sounds comparable to a 1200G? Any other suggestions?

Yes I have the best wife ever
I just received a catalog from Music Direct today. It had a lot of great looking TTs. One that really caught my eye was the Denon DP-3000ne. It’s a direct drive table and looks the part. Add a nice MC cart in the $1k-$2k range and you’re are in the $4k-$5k price range. Also check out the new Technics 1300G. That TT will is probably great with a nice cart. There were also some nice Music Hall and Clearaudio decks in the catalog. I’ve heard none of these decks, but they look really nice.

If I was in your neck of the woods I head over to NJ and check out the Technics decks at Skyfi Audio. I have no affiliation with them. I just like the videos they do on Technics TTs and carts and other vintage type gear.

You could get a custom wood plinth made for a technics if you like the wood look.

Edit: I see someone beat me to it

One big difference between these two is aluminum vs brass platter.
Probably a very different sound signature.
The photos show a shiny brass platter top. Reality is a thick rubber record mat. The rubber mat is essential for attenuating motor hum and bearing noise.

The importance of the brass (in physics) is the use of dissimilar metals to reduce resonance. It also adds mass to the platter. My Luxman platter is all aluminum - it rings. My VPI platter has aluminum and stainless steel layers - it does not ring. But, with a thick rubber mat, the Luxman has lower through-stylus noise than the VPI with a thin mat.

The mat is an effective vibration damper in the Luxman and with the Technics.

Retip! Retip!

VAS has retipped both my SL and ML. Happy customer.

Oddly enough, the recommendation for years has been to put the motor pod on a foam rubber mouse pad.

I highly recommend upgrading to the OOP Technics 6mm thick mat.
It dampens very well and also corrects a VTA deficiency. Two birds, one stone kind of thing.
