Equipment Recommendations - The Home For New System and Upgrade Advice

View attachment 228628I have an older Sony receiver and Bose speakers, both with spring clips. I have used bare wire as pictured on left, but have had issues. Has anyone used a double sided speaker wire with pin connectors on each end, as pictured on the right? I am wondering if anyone has used this option and whether there were any issues with the spring clips vs bare wire? If so, any recs on best pin connector speaker wire brands?
It’s been a long time, but the only issue I remember was that the pin connector wasn’t grasped as solidly as the bare wire. Only an issue of the equipment is moved around though

Is anyone here in the USA planing on any purchases from the EU in the next few months? If so, are you planning on buying earlier in case Trump does impose an EU tariff or are you rolling the dice? I’m hearing of more EU manufacturers upping their US in the near term in anticipation.

I’m planning on purchasing a new Transrotor, late spring to early summer, and a potential 20% price hike would be a painful lump to take. Maybe causing me to look at a different brand (which would suck). Or I can move early and put the table on a credit card, but t I’d really rather not do that (I try to keep my credit load light as a rule, and just save up for hobby stuff).

Thoughts?

Personally, I'm not actively looking at anything but the threat of tarrifs would only inspire me to pull the trigger if I had cash in hand and was going to pull the trigger soon anyway. But it wouldn't inspire me enough to finance something. This is all luxury stuff. There's a lot of luxury items that I can't afford. If the price of something goes up, I can wait a little longer, or accept that I can't afford that thing.

But honestly with the threat of tarrifs, luxury goods are least of my concern. I'm much more worried about hikes of 15%+ on my day to day living while watching my investments crash at the same time.

Oh i hear you on that. Honestly, one of the few things that is helping me keep from blowing a mental gasket is this stuff. That and my family. So thinking about a luxury hobby item, it’s kind of like therapy right now.

Been thoroughly enjoying the new turntable and phono stage set up!
Now I'm wondering about a new integrated amp. I was going to get something simple for the bedroom, where the Fluance RT85 is moving to, but now I'm thinking of maybe putting the Marantz PM8006 up there and looking at something else here in the basement.
Needs to have a power amp direct option for the home theater side of things.
Reminder of what the rest of my setup looks like:
VPI Prime Scout
Darlington Labs MP8B
Sonus Faber Lumina V
Bluesound Node for streaming

What should I be looking at? Budget should probably stick around $2k. I love me a good open box or used deal!

A little over your budget, but the Kinki Studio EX-M1+ would be my choice.

Closer to $2k checkout the Cambridge Audio EXA100.

I auditioned the PM8006 4-5 years ago and opted for a CA CXA81 which was/is an excellent amp.

If you fancy doing something fun and altogether different you could try tubes.

I know you have had good deals from TMR and maybe something like this could fit your bill?

This and maybe 6 KT88 (4 for amp and 2 spare) would come in just over budget and 40W per channel tube should be enough for your speakers.

I like @Joe Mac ‘s Primaluna idea, but if tubes aren’t your thing you could get a used Parasound Hint 6 for around $2k. I had the original Hint (Halo INTegrated) and enjoyed it.

Glad you're enjoying the Prime Scout and other recent additions! As for amps, perhaps give something from Atoll Electronique a look. I recently heard their IN80 while auditioning my Fidelio (speakers), and it showed up my Moon 240i. Both were smooth and detailed, but the Atoll had noticeably more body and presence by comparison. I was impressed.

The IN100 Signature is probably where you'd want to look at a $2k budget, though I can't seem to find exact US prices.. It has home theatre bypass and a dual mono design, as well as 140 watts into 4 ohms and reputedly iron-fisted bass control, which might benefit those Luminas.

Off-hand, there are few integrated amps that I know of with an ability to disconnect the power amp section and drive it externally. I have one - the Bryston B100ST, which is discontinued, but it is in your price range as pre-owned.

The somewhat newer B135-SST2 also has this feature below $2K. The latest Cubed models are above the price point.

For HT though, which is what @SMeekWoodworks is looking for, all you need is the HT input that bypasses the preamp for movie watching. Plenty of amps have that including the PrimaLuna I linked to and the Parasound @SnowmaNick refered to.

I think I get it now - just the HT by-pass. I don’t do HT, so the Bryston models may not be the best fit as the decoupling switch is on the rear of the amp.

Okay I've got a SUT question for a buddy of mine. He's got a Rega Phono MM MK3 stage, there's currently a Rega P6 with the Neo power supply and a Ania MC cart on sale, but his stage only does MM. Would a SUT work for this application? It's running through a Onkyo 8020.

Yep. It would need to be matched to the MC. Based on the specs of the Ania MC it looks like a standard 1:10 SUT should work fine and would produce a roughly 3.5mV output.

Yep. It would need to be matched to the MC - you want your SUT to have at least 10x the reflected impedance of the MC cart, which is impacted by the level of step-up. Based on the specs of the Ania MC it looks like a standard 1:10 SUT should work fine.
Awesome thanks! Any suggestions on the most inexpensive but decent model for something like that? Brands to look at? And what does this mean for the Neo power supply? Does the step up go before the power supply?

Don’t know the answer to your question but doesn’t your friend have a computer? Asking for a friend. 😁

The step-up is passive - it goes between the TT outputs and the phono stage.

There are lots of decent vintage models. I have a Denon AU-320 that I like.
