I felt really stupid replaying all of the bowser stages and hat switches looking for what 3 castle secret stars I missed until I realized that some of the toads give them to you! Great nostalgia trip.

I definitely had to look up one of the Toad stars. Just said hi to Yoshi, now I’m free to go play Sunshine or Galaxy for the first time ever. Which one should I choose?

Ah, I misheard.

I hear it's getting rough reviews but I never trust early access reviews.

There was one bad review from Ars that, frankly, seemed like it was missing the point and doesn’t feel borne out at all in my experience thus far.

Most of the rest has been quite positive.

I think the same turning issues that existed in the original are still present here.
Fun tip for Level 14 is to jump into the portal right when the clock strikes 12ish and everything inside the level locks up. Makes getting the 8 coin star and the other stars a little easier.
Good tip for Wet-Dry World as well, backflip into the painting to raise the water to the max level. You can even get into the part where you're supposed to use the cannon by jumping into the barrier at this height instead

That is beautiful. Makes me wish I wanted it.

Anyone ever played The Hollow Knight before? I was looking for a game similar to both Ori games (both Ori and the Blind Forest and Ori and the Will of the Wisps are absolutely amazing) and this is very similar. Maps are a little confusing compared to Ori, and there’s an annoying thing where if you die you lose all your coins and have to go all the way back to a manual save station. Combat is much trickier than Ori, actually requires some skill and a lot of patience dealing with enemies.

Hollow Knight is a personal favorite! Super challenging. Basically a 2D Souls-like platformer, and a fucking adorable one at that. Looking forward to the sequel.

I second what @EvanBenner said, it's a favorite of mine as well. The maps are confusing, and I think that's by design, but it does get a little easier if you get the Compass so you can see where you are. I spent a long time just wandering around looking for the way to go on many occasions. One thing you will find is that even when you know where to go, this game is LONG. howlongtobeat.com list just the main story at 25 hours, so expect a lot of time just exploring. I personally put around 50 hours getting to 103%, not quite fully completed but close.

yeah I think I need to realize that it's much, much less streamlined than the Ori games, for example. Less "hand-holding" progression. I'm having to google "Hollow Knight where to go after [region]" because there's a lot of options. I'm relatively new to Metroidvania games so I need to get used to the countless options and exploration of it. I was getting frustrated yesterday because I kept dying trying to beat a boss and the save bench was like 5 rooms away. So it was a hassle to reload and have to travel through so many areas and get to the boss to only keep dying. I saw other players mention that you can skip that particular boss until later in the game when you're stronger.

It's pretty common for the bench to be a small ways away from the boss unfortunately. I usually just did the same thing I do in Dark Souls once I find a boss - head straight there and ignore/dodge all the enemies.

It was the 3 Mantis Lords. There is technically a bench closer to where they are but it required avoiding more difficult enemies that are harder to dodge. I looked up how to beat them and someone on Reddit had suggested just coming back to it later when stronger since there’s an ability to deflect some of the attacks that I don’t have yet.

Ah, my favorite boss fight in the game. Once you figure out the patterns/tells and how to dodge each, you can do that fight without taking any damage, and it plays out almost like a dance. I won't give it all away, but my best advice is to try and stay in the middle as much as possible except to dodge.

I get what you're saying on the bench for that too, if you're not using the closest one it's quite a trek.
