Everything Video Games!

Need a short break from Control.

I just picked up and started playing Asterigos: Curse of the Stars.

Based on the trailer, I picked up some Kena Bridge of Spirits so I gotta check this game out for sure!

Started playing Death Stranding on PC last night. Story seems interesting and very Kojima, Have basically no thoughts on the gameplay because I got to play all of 20 minutes in 2 hours time. Only used the basic movement mechanics so far. Hopefully now that the prologue's out of the way I can get more into the meat and potatoes.

The Unreal 5 Engine looks insane. I can't wait until we start getting some games in our hands to play other than Fortnight.

Like with many games using the Unreal 5 Engine, the above is a yet to be announced game. And the above is a demo under its code name. Another yet to be announced game has caught my eye as well. So far it's known only as " Project E" and it's hard to find any details on it yet.

Feel like it's been a while since I posted a gaming update. I finished Final Fantasy 13-2 last week. Overall, I think I liked this game better than FF13. Right out of the gate, almost every issue I had with the first game has been fixed - More open, better camera controls, better explanations of things, better pre-emptive strike system, easier to run from enemies, etc.

Story gets a bit wonky, as you would expect for anything that deals with time travel, but I still liked it. Had I played this when it came out, I would have been devastated by the ending. It was also fun going back and experiencing the different paradox endings, which proved that the actual ending was probably the best outcome to this series of events.

Combat is essentially more of the same, but with a bit more customization. You can change between the two characters you play with here. You only get Noel and Serah, but they can utilize every fighting style. You also get a third member in the form of monsters that you capture during your travels. Each monster can be leveled, and many have unique abilities. Fully leveling characters was pretty easy, and I maxed out well before the end and postgame. You can also infuse monsters into each other to transfer some of those abilities to the ones you want to use. You can have 3 monsters on deck at any time, so you can make use of a mix of healing, attacking, and buffs/defense. There's one late game fight that is Serah and your monsters versus a stronger version of something you fought before. If you don't bring a strong Sentinel monster to this fight to draw the enemy to it, the enemy will basically stun lock Serah to death. Seeing as this is the paradigm I used the least, it was cool to see it have a moment of necessity and to show off how good it can be in the right situation. There was also another late game boss that was easiest to kill with the Sabateur paradigm, dealing poison and wound damage being way more effective than physical and magic attacks. My one complaint with combat is that it is markedly easier - achievement guides suggested using easy mode for everything except the one achievement requiring normal difficulty, but I did the whole game on normal until I went back for cleanup/alt timeline achievements, as easy mode makes things faster. Being easier, I found myself just pressing A through the fights much more often, 13 made me work a bit more for each fight by having to switch paradigms regularly.

Now I'm in the early hours of Lightning Returns, and it gives me massive anxiety. This one has a countdown clock, and the combat is some weird hybrid of the Paradigm system and the clothes/job system of FFX-2. Getting used to a semi-new fighting system, mixed with the fear of running out of time, is my nightmare. I come to RPGS for the simplicity and ability to take my time! On the other hand, it seems like the enemies are statically placed like in FF13, so I don't think I need to fear running out of time because I did too many random battles. I'll have more thoughts as I get through it.

Wow, there is so much more to Asterigos Curse of the Stars than just the main story.

If you want to platinum the game, it's likely going to take at least two rounds and well over 100 hours.

As your progress things change in the game. And circling back a bunch of new things unlock. The biggest change happens during the Trinity event. Something like a dozen new bosses appear throughout the world, each has a trophy for defeating. And they are only available to find during during the trinity event before the final battle. If you progress through the final battle these bosses are missable.

It is recommended that you make a save here, before continuing the game, so you can keep going back to explore every corner of the world and find all these bosses to get the trophies.

There are also dozens of side quests, many of which have trophies. And they are not clear that they are side quests. It's often you knock on a door, someone requests something, and you have remember what it is that they wanted, where to find them, and later on in the game return with what they wanted. Often they will ask you for other things and after 3 or 4 communications a trophy is issued.

The hardest trophy to get looks to be the one for completing a round of game play at level 20 or under. It is advised to only attempt this feat in New Game + mode, so not your first round through the game.

Checking out A Plague Tale Requiem tonight. The graphics on this game are insane. It truly does feel next gen.

Omygosh, I forgot this was coming out so soon and I won't be able to get to it till November but thank you for the reminder. So happy to see something positive right off the bat. Loved APT: Innocence.

What're you playing it on? I have it in my Steam wishlist but I've plenty to play so I'll see if that $50 price drops in the coming months.

I enjoyed the first game. I won't say it was a mind-blowing experience, but it was def fun and a well put together game. I see that little brother is back. That's a shame. I could've lived with a recap that let us know that in the ensuing time between the events of the first game and present game time that he'd taken a long walk off a short rat-infested pier.

I saw this was on GamePass and got excited to try it, but I need to finish up my replaythhrough of The Witcher first. It weirdly didn't need me to download directly from GamePass but rather I was able to play it from the cloud

I think he's a little bit older so maybe he's more of a sidekick this time through rather than just a bother the whole time.

I finished Xenoblade Chronicles 3’s main story last night just shy of 140 hours (I dilly-dallied a lot).

I’m a bit shocked tbh. I hadn’t put much thought into the possibility of Noah and Mio not ending up together (despite the game giving you a major scare at the end of Chapter 5). I already spent an hour or two sleuthing around online for theories to make me feel better, but ultimately I’d describe the ending as sad. I guess that means I’d rather live in the “endless now” than to see those two worlds drift apart. Brilliant stuff, this game/series.

I’m now looking forward to finishing up some post-game quests and leveling my party up to 99. I was at level 78 going into the final boss (unlike in XC2, this time I chose not to use any of my bonus EXP points… I can bump everyone to level 93 right now but would rather grind my way there so I don’t miss out on any important enemy drops).

I expect there will be enough postgame content to keep me busy for a few more weeks. At this point, I honestly have no idea which of the three main XC games is my favorite (I never played XCX).

Do I need to play Innocence first? Think I have it on PS4 still.

I'm through chapter 6 now on the Requiem.

If you didn't play Innocence you wouldn't know the backstory behind what's going on with the rats and Hugos condition. You would be like I know what's going on but can go with the flow if you didn't play Innocence.
