Everything Video Games!

October was mainly a month of movies for me, so I took a few day screen break before deciding to finally dive in to more media, beginning with a my backlog of games.

We actually squeezed in part of the Taiwanese horror game Detention toward the end of October, so I look forward to finishing up the final chapter of that later this week. It's only a handful of hours long but pretty interesting and creepy. Going to watch the movie adaptation on Shudder once we do finish.

We bought a 3-month sub for Game Pass with our new Xbox Series S back in September, which went neglected during our month-long horror movie marathon, so I'm prioritizing items on there to start (even though we'll def extend our GP sub). Before October I'd started Hi-Fi Rush but I noticed Ghost Song is slated to leave GP soon, so I dove into that first this weekend. It's sitting about 50/50 for me right now, with some things I really like about it and some things that are equally frustrating. I've just triggered what I think it the mainline quest, so we'll see how far I take it from here.

After a quick peek at the shorter playtime for Citizen Sleeper, I decided to switch to that later in the afternoon yesterday and was sucked right in. It's very text heavy and plays like a visual novel in parts, but the tabletop style gameplay cycle between narrative scenes kept me plowing forward. I think I have only the last chapter of the DLC left, so I'll wrap that up later this week. You can really see how your decisions and ability to deliver on timed quests via dice rolls impacts the storyline. Now having played almost the entire story, there's so many things I'd change about what I prioritized and how I used my resources in the earlier half. This game is super impressive, and blends cyberpunk/space corp themes from The Outer Worlds with choice based gameplay I think aligns with Disco Elysium (maybe?). Super glad it's getting a sequel!

I really liked Ghost Song! It scratches that Ori/Hollow Knight itch while being its own thing.

not sure why I'm not jazzed about this being live action

Yeah…. I would personally give the reins to someone like Studio Ghibli and see what they can do with the story. It can every easily turn into a Live-Action Avatar: The Last Airbender situation.

Also this article is how I find out there’s a Borderlands movie coming out next year? 😱

There were rumors they were beginning work on this a few months ago. Bummed it's live action. I just don't see that going super well. I'd love a straight up hand drawn animated film. That's what a Zelda adaptation should look like.

Finally got a character in Diablo 4 to level 100. With my other 2 characters (vanilla game and Season 1), I got bored around level 90 or so and stopped playing.

Have I finished Citizen Sleeper or Ghost Song? No.

Has that stopped me from starting something new?

...Also no.

I booted up Lies of P yesterday for just a taste, but I've bitten off a good chunk since.

It's really good, y'all! One of the best Soulsborne emulators but with its own unique flavor to stand proudly alongside its influences. Already screaming in rage at certain bosses, so they've got that element down pat.

I've been playing this one too, it's fantastic! Style is a mix of Bloodborne and Resident Evil 4, controls are great, soundtrack is top tier. Combat is challenging, and I like that it emphasizes aggressive gameplay like Bloodborne, but also blocking like Sekiro. I played for a bit thinking I was going to do a mostly motivity/strength build, with some Advance added in. The shock bonk was really good for a bit, but then I got the Holy Sword of the Ark. If the game's going to give me a big bonking sword, the unga bunga in me can't say no. Plus, it turns into a glaive.

Speaking of controls, I got to a part yesterday where you had to go down a building by falling down to narrow platforms. Sooooo much easier than a Souls game thanks to the tighter movement controls.

What boss are you on? I'm currently fighting the Black Rabbit Brotherhood, which has been my favorite fight so far. I've also officially renamed them Ergo and the Bunnymen. Can't believe I listened to Northernlion do this fight for roughly 4 hours and he never made that joke.

Currently stuck on Fuoco. Spent 20 star fragments already and most of my fire cures/defenses. Got super close a handful of times. Good thing star fragments are farmable, otherwise I'd really be pissed.

That one took me a while. The bosses in this game are no joke. The boss after that one took a bit too, mostly because I got stuck on figuring out its big AOE blast. Told my wife once I figured it out the fight was over, and sure enough on the same try I survived it I won.
