Everything Video Games!

I've been playing this one too, it's fantastic! Style is a mix of Bloodborne and Resident Evil 4, controls are great, soundtrack is top tier. Combat is challenging, and I like that it emphasizes aggressive gameplay like Bloodborne, but also blocking like Sekiro. I played for a bit thinking I was going to do a mostly motivity/strength build, with some Advance added in. The shock bonk was really good for a bit, but then I got the Holy Sword of the Ark. If the game's going to give me a big bonking sword, the unga bunga in me can't say no. Plus, it turns into a glaive.

Speaking of controls, I got to a part yesterday where you had to go down a building by falling down to narrow platforms. Sooooo much easier than a Souls game thanks to the tighter movement controls.

What boss are you on? I'm currently fighting the Black Rabbit Brotherhood, which has been my favorite fight so far. I've also officially renamed them Ergo and the Bunnymen. Can't believe I listened to Northernlion do this fight for roughly 4 hours and he never made that joke.
Just made it through the Brotherhood in Malum. OOOF that was irksome. Spam for days! The cathedral was tough too, but mostly because phase 1 was so easy my first try and then I'd get careless and need heals too early.

Haven't played since this weekend, but I really liked the Brotherhood fight. Good test in patience and spatial awareness. With the cathedral, had the same issue for a while, but got the pattens down for phase 1 really well. For phase 2 I figured out it was easier to ignore what I named Centiroth - centipede plus "I am the one winged angel", and just go back to fighting the other side. Big issue with the charge attack was I was usually too close to see that it was a 2 part attack, and the second part was what was killing me.

Just reached the swamps, and I can't get 5 enemies in without dying and losing all my souls... I mean ergo. This might be the part where it officially gets Not Fun™.

Just beat the story in Like a Dragon Gaiden. Put about 24 hours into it first run through with some substories and coliseum stuff to still complete. I'll never 100% the Yakuza games because I refuse to learn shogi and mahjong.

Help! I played the demo for Dave the Diver on Switch before finishing Super Mario Bros Wonder and TOTK and now all I want to do is play Dave the Diver.

Something about deep sea spearfishing and sushi restaurant management just feels right.

Finished the Dead Space Remake and thiught it was really great and well done. Looks fantastic and some really cool additions and tweaks. I loved these games back in high school, so it was a nice trip down memory lane. Minus how bleak and oppressive it is, especially when you compare to the campiness of RE4 that also came out this year). Anyway, excited to play something much lighter next.

I finally finished Super Mario Odyssey and I understand the plaudits for calling it one of the best games of all time. I got it with my Switch way back in late 2020 but played it in increments every 6 months or so until a couple of months ago when I decided I should probably just power through to finish it. Faced Bowser on the Moon and then discovered the Mushroom Kingdom which was super cool. I thought it was just an end-game area but little did I know there was tons to do and tons to do in other Kingdoms as well. I wanted to wind down playing still thinking "okay there can't be too much to do post-game." However, I might have spent more time playing the game post-facing Bowser than before. I put in maybe 70 hours total which felt like a lot!

I went to the Cascade Kingdom first, opened up the silver box saw the additional moons and noticed I was also only a couple of moons left from completing the whole world so I cheated and looked up how to complete those moons. I did this in each subsequent world, but I realized there were whole areas that I completely missed in each Kingdom. I tried to find every missing moon before giving in and looking up how to find certain ones.

Some of the moons are ridiculously hidden or require you to do something that I would never had thought of. There was one in the Metro Kingdom where you sit on a bench next to a guy and he gives you a moon. There was absolutely no way I'd have ever thought of doing that to get a moon. I cheated and did the 2 player mode for the volleyball 100 hits moon. I cheated and did a glitch with one of the letter blocks in the Metro Kingdom for the Jump rope Moon. But other than that, used some video guides if needed to get 100% Moons and Purple Coins. I didn't buy all the outfits because the regular coin totals were hard to get. The Balloon World was more fun hiding balloons rather than finding them but it still takes a lot of coins to get them all.

Until I returned to the Wooded Kingdom the second time I realized that I had barely used the cappy jump/dive to get double or triple jumps. So I had to git gud really quickly with some of the more advanced moons. This Dark Side moon might be one of the harder levels/challenges I've ever played before in any game. The first time I finally beat it, I mistakenly went to the left and caused the bullet bill to go off course and it didn't break the boxes. I had to do it over again. I wanted to scream. The Darker Side was really frustrating until I looked up how to bypass most of the second half using Glydon. Really, really challenging but not unfun at any point.

My ranking of the kingdoms because I kept thinking about it while playing.

  1. Wooded Kingdom
  2. Metro Kingdom
  3. Sand Kingdom
  4. Mushroom Kingdom
  5. Bowser's Kingdom
  6. Seaside Kingdom
  7. Cascade Kingdom
  8. Moon Kingdom
  9. Lost Kingdom
  10. Cap Kingdom
  11. Snow Kingdom
  12. Lake Kingdom
  13. Dark Side
  14. Luncheon Kingdom (I really, really disliked this one)
  15. Cloud Kingdom
  16. Ruined Kingdom
  17. Darker Side

I’ve heard this is excellent! I should check it out. Fashion Dreamer has kind of eaten my soul.

Revisiting the Persona 5 soundtrack for the first time in years, and it really is one of the greatest of all time isn't it? Wish these games weren't 1,000 hours long so I could reasonably revisit.

I'm on the King of Puppets. First phase is on lock now, second just kicks my ass. Big ol bonkin sword wasn't helping lay damage down. Just realized I keep forgetting that thing turns into a much faster glaive, gotta try that next time I play.

Also, fuck that clown right before the opera house. Removed that thing from the game on principle.

Oh, I hella skipped that clown. Luckily he's slow so I ran him back a ways and then booked it.

King of Puppets was a toughy! (Though only a couple haven't been haha). I opted to use the wish stone to keep my specter alive a bit longer as a decoy, which helped.

Thankfully, the swamp leveled out after that first overpowered stretch, and I'm a few areas deeper now.

Took a breather from Lies of P yesterday to see what Cocoon was like and made it probably 85% in one sitting. Really neat puzzler. Going to wrap that up after I make up for my procrastination on some writing projects.

Took a few shots at the King again last night. Switching to the glaive is a huge help, much quicker than broadsword mode and let me actually get hits in before he jumps away. That first combo after he turns the flames on is my current obstacle. I'm a masochist, so I've been doing the fights solo. Loving the fights though, they all feel like puzzles where you figure out a few pieces each time until you get everything to fit correctly. Haven't had any boss except the first one that I was able to beat in a few tries, they've all taken some work.

Started playing Solar Ash last week and I'm really liking it, breezed through most of the game and find myself near the end already after about 10 hours or so. Gameplay, design style, environment is very similar to Fe. I'm also reminded of some Spyro platforming and the way each level is laid out. There are some side stories but most of the game can be completed with collectibles without much guidance. Combat is easy, with the bosses less fighting and more time-based combat sequences which are super satisfying when pulled off.

This one's been on my to-play list for a hot minute. I love their previous game, Hyper Light Drifter. Highly recommended if you haven't played it.
